Executive Director
Under the supervision of the Secretary-General and President of the African Academy of Sciences, the Executive Director will be expected to: provide leadership, propel the Academy strategic agenda and action, and fundraise for new programme within the approved SAA.
Key Roles and Responsibility
A. Projects Management
* Oversee the development of programmes work plans and budget;
* Supervise and coordinate all AAS activities through review and analyses of progress reports, regular meetings with departmental officers and monitoring of their work;
* Prepare periodic scientific and technical reports on project activities as well as annual reports to donors;
* Oversee the management of grants and contracts awarded by AAS, ensure grant deliverables are met and programs are in compliance with contracted terms;
B. Fundraising
* Prepare and implement comprehensive fundraising strategy to meet agreed funding programme implementation targets;
* Serve as the principal liaison officer for the Academy and keep in contact with the scientific community and donor agencies on behalf of the Academy.
* Strengthen existing links and maintain confidence with international funding institutions and donors, for the purpose of facilitating mobilization of the resources required for Academy programmes; Develop and maintain high-level contacts with the Government in which AAS has its headquarters; Work with Government agencies to obtain funding for new programs;
* Assist the AAS Secretary General, Treasurer and the President in mobilizing funds to the Endowment Fund and overseeing the management of the established Fund. Oversee the preparation of annual technical and financial report on the performance of the Endowment Fund and other funds to respective contributors, three months after the end of each financial year.
C. Membership Recruitment
* In liaison with the Secretary General, coordinate activities related to the recruitment, nomination, evaluation and induction procedures of AAS Fellows, having regard to gender and regional equity; 10. Arrange for induction of new members every three years during the AAS General Assembly.
D. General Finance and Administration
* Develop and implement policies and actions in consultation with departmental heads to enable AAS further its objectives through effective leadership and team building;
* Provide guidance on the development of AAS Business Plan to enable the translation of broad objectives into specific activities;
* Develop and implement management information systems for effective control over all AAS programmes. In addition, ensure that professional administrative systems and procedures are updated and maintained;
* Oversee the recruitment and appointment of staff, their orientation and annual performance evaluation. Supervise;
* Oversee Academy financial operations and production, printing, and distribution of Academy publications.
Qualifications and Remuneration
The right candidate will be an internationally recognized Scientist with proven achievements in Academic and Science Management. He must be a PhD-degree holder (or equivalent) for the past 15 years and must have held a high level leadership position in an Academic or Research Institution at Director or Chief Executive Level.
Long experience as Director of regional and research development institutions with fundraising experience will be an added advantage. The candidate must be a team leader who can motivate others to work hard and in harmony. An attractive remuneration package commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered.

Information Technology Officer
Under the supervision of the Finance and Administration Manager the I.T officer will be expected to steer the IT Department, Maintain the ICT infrastructure of the organisation and any such areas of improvement.
Key roles and Responsibility Include:
A. Internal and external communication of AAS:
* Administer and maintain the AAS telephone, Internet and Email systems; install, configure and manage the local server, liaising with service providers ensuring efficiency, effectiveness and availability of the services;
* Compile and maintain an up to date electronic database of AAS Fellows based on their fields of expertise. Develop, configure and administer the database, supervise the digitization process and liaising with other partner institutions for updating of the data;
* Analyze statistics and network traffic patterns identifying areas of improvement and recommend potential solutions.
B. Development and maintenance of AAS Website and sub sites
* Establish a web presence through continual development, maintenance, and updating the AAS and affiliated partners websites (AAS: www.aasciences.org; NASAC: www.nasaconline.org; RISE: www.riseafrica.net;; AFORNET: www.afornet.org). Under-take domain registration and renewal, web-host configuration, design, programming and uploading of content. Review and maintain all sites to ensure availability and connectivity 24/7 all year round;
* Establish and maintain AAS Intranet, facilitating file sharing, printing, photocopying, scanning and other network services.
C. IT Support to AAS community
* Advise the management on ICT trends and regulations and how to adhere to them; providing input on ICT related issues on proposal development;
* Perform backups of key organization data such as in Finance and other key programs. Provide computer user support to staff
* Guide procurement of with the necessary technical specifications during purchase of ICT equipment according to standards and least cost in keeping with rules and regulations and ascertain that the correct services have been rendered in a timely manner.
Qualifications:
* Education: University degree, preferably in Information Technology, Communication Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or any science/Mathematics related disciplines
* Experience: At least two years of experience in IT systems management, hands-on expertise with Servers, Wired and Wireless networking equipment PABX, and LAN technologies
Editorial Assistant
The Editorial Assistant for Academy Science Publishers (ASP) will under the supervision of the Scientific Editor, assist in handling all functions related to publication that include:
* Liaise with authors and reviewers on manuscript transfer, review and publication within stated deadlines.
* Maintain a list of reviewers according to areas of specialization. Discuss with authors and reviewers, modes of transmitting documents and files. Assign reviewers according to areas of specialization.
* Assist in the preparation for editing manuscripts and in facilitating their publication including preparation of cover and editorial of D&I within given deadlines. Assist in the preparation of manuscripts for printing of final documents.
* Assist in Desktop Publishing of the Whydah (the Academy’s Newsletter).Consult with the Publishing Manager in the production and editing of the Whydah.
* Assist in preparation of progress reports on Whydah for the meetings of the governing organs of the Academy and for the Annual Report.
* Assist in management of subscriptions to and sales of D&I and Whydah. Assist in managing the sale of books published by AAS.
Qualifications:
* Education: Degree in Information Sciences, Journalism, Graphics design or any creative arts related fields
* Skills: An eye for detail, spelling and grammar skills, Good communication and interpersonal skills
* Experience: Two year Experience in publication.
