Benitez is still Inter coach for now, says Moratti

Milan - Confusion continued to reign over the future of Inter Milan coach Rafael Benitez on Tuesday after club president Massimo Moratti played down widespread speculation that he had been sacked.

Reports said Spaniard Benitez, only at the European and Italian champions since June, was being removed because of his side’s poor domestic form and his outburst over what he saw as Inter’s lack of ambition following Saturday’s World Club Cup win.

“At the moment the coach of Inter is still Benitez,” Moratti told reporters outside his offices where he had held meetings with club officials. “I haven’t been in contact with any other coach.”

Brazilian Leonardo, who left as coach of city rivals AC Milan in May after just one season as manager, has become favorite to succeed Benitez after Zenit St. Petersburg said their boss Luciano Spalletti would be staying in Russia. “Let’s not joke,” Moratti said when asked about reports he had held talks with Leonardo.

Former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga has also been linked with the job despite Benitez saying on Monday he was surprised by the reports about his imminent sacking. — Reuters

Udinese defeats Inter Milan 3-1

Udinese exploited poor defending by Inter Milan to beat the Serie A champion 3-1 on Sunday.

It is Inter coach Leonardo's first defeat since he took over from Rafa Benitez in December and snaps a run of five straight wins under the Brazilian.

Dejan Stankovic gave Inter the lead in the 16th and it appeared that Inter was in total control when he went close minutes later.

However, Udinese equalized soon after through Cristian Zapata and by halftime was leading 2-1 after Antonio Di Natale scored from a free kick.

In the second half Maurizio Domizzi added a third after Inter's defense was again unable to clear the danger.

FIFA, Russia sign declaration on 2018 World Cup

FIFA President Sepp Blatter said he was certain the 2018 World Cup would be in good hands after he and Russian officials signed a formal declaration Sunday awarding the football tournament to Russia.

Russia has never before organized a World Cup and has an enormous amount of work to do to get ready. In addition to building stadiums and hotels, Russia will need to upgrade airports and roads to transport 32 football teams and millions of visitors to 13 cities spread across much of its vast territory.

Blatter was less focused on the organizational challenges than on his greater vision of bringing football to largely uncharted territory such as Russia and Qatar, which will hold the World Cup in 2022.

"Football is more than just kicking the ball," he said at a news conference after the signing ceremony. "It is also important to connect different nations, and our philosophy this time was to give the World Cup to territories that had never hosted it."

Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko picked up on the theme in thanking FIFA for choosing Russia over countries that already have much of the necessary infrastructure in place.

"FIFA is not just a football organization," he said. "It develops the world and it goes to new countries."

Blatter met Saturday with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who has promised that Russia would follow through on its commitments to spend tens of billions of dollars on new stadiums and infrastructure.

Striker Toni joins Juventus

Rome -- Juventus have completed the free signing of former Italy striker Luca Toni from Genoa, the Turin giants revealed on Friday.

The 33-year-old former Bayern Munich and Fiorentina forward, who has 16 goals in 47 caps for Italy, signed an 18-month deal.

According to Italian news agency Ansa, the deal means Genoa will save six million euros that were due to Toni as a signing on fee when he joined on a free from Bayern at the beginning of the season.

And he revealed that he couldn't say no despite the pay cut needed to accept Juve's offer.

"You can't say no to Juve, I'm realising a dream, I'm delighted," he said at his official unveiling. "When I was offered the move I didn't hesitate and I had no problem taking a pay cut.

"I have confidence (in Juve) because I've seen the hunger and the desire to get results."

Toni, a member of Italy's 2006 World Cup winning squad, had scored just three goals in 16 games this season for Genoa.

Ding eases into semis at Snooker Masters

London -- Chinese wunderkind Ding Junhui saw off former world champion Graeme Dott 6-2 at Wembley Arena on Thursday, becoming the first player to advance into the semifinals at the Snooker Masters.

Ding, 23, cruised into the interval with a 3-1 lead, as he took victories in the first, second and fourth frames all with centuries.

Dott, who knocked out world No. 1 John Higgins in the first round on Monday, managed to take one back after an entangled fifth frame but lost the following three frames quickly with too many unforced errors.

"It feels good. I haven't got any pressure. It's just like practice," said Ding, whose best result at Wembley was a runnerup in 2007 as he only lost to "Rocket" Ronnie O'Sullivan.

"Maybe my three centuries in the first half gave him too much pressure," said Ding. "He got few chances to hit the balls, then he probably lost his sharpness and was under pressure."

Ding is going to face the winner between debutant Jamie Cope and veteran Mark King, but he had no mood to study his semifinal opponent.

"I don't know too much about them and I don't need to," said Ding. "I will just focus on my game on Saturday."

Qatar on defensive over empty stadiums

2022 World Cup hosts Qatar were forced yesterday to explain the rows of empty seats at many Asian Cup matches after barely 3,500 people watched a crunch group game.

Tournament organisers also addressed concerns as to why the apparently sell-out must-win final group game between the hosts and Kuwait at the 40,000 capacity Khalifa Stadium on Sunday saw many seats unoccupied.

That same evening, only 3,529 people were at Al Gharafa Stadium—capacity 22,000 - to see a thrilling 2-2 draw between China, the world’s most populous country, and Uzbekistan.

The result saw the Uzbeks top their group and China go home, while Qatar also progressed to the last eight with a 3-0 win.

“We try our best to attract people to come here,” said tournament director Tokuaki Suzuki, adding it was particularly hard to draw large crowds to stadiums when there are two games going on at the same time.

“There are not so many people who came to Qatar from China,” he said. “We are trying our best to attract fans to the stadiums.”

Iran coach Afshin Ghotbi has been among those who has pleaded with local people to fill stadiums at the Asian Cup, warning: “The world is watching.”

But his call has gone largely unheeded, with stadiums usually about half-full. Organisers were also left embarrassed after Qatar fans left in their droves well before the end of the hosts’ opening 2-0 defeat to Uzbekistan.

The cavernous Khalifa Stadium was eerily empty by the time the final whistle blew, the celebrations of the Uzbeks’ small travelling contingent echoing around the ground.

Jassim Al Rumaihi, spokesman for the local organising committee, admitted he was “shocked” by the vast rows of empty seats at the China-Uzbekistan game.

Doha trounce hapless Kuwait

By Peter Townson

Doha Rugby Football Centre (DRFC) grabbed their second win in two weeks on Friday, when they scored eleven tries to trounce a hapless Kuwait team by 67 points to nil.

Having beaten Bahrain the previous weekend, the Doha team were looking to continue the strong form they have shown so far this season, and in truth, the result was never in doubt as a rampant Doha posted an impressive score against the visitors. The game began with early Doha pressure which was maintained for most of the match as Kuwait only managed limited spells of possession or attacking play throughout.

Doha scored their first try within the first three minutes after winning opposition ball at the lineout before Chris Beard sold a dummy to the visiting defence and went through to score. Beard converted his own try to make the score 7-0.

Beard was called into kicking duty soon again, as he stepped up to add the extra two points after Andy Coomer scored a try in the corner.

Tireless kick chasing by Jaco de Jager was causing the Kuwaiti defence problems throughout the afternoon, but despite the pressure, Doha missed the opportunity to score on a number of occasions.

However, prop forward Richard Liddington was not to miss his chance to cross the line, and scored the third try – following another strong lineout win – which was converted to take the score to 21-0.

A breakaway try from 35 metres out saw Conor Coakley add his name to the home side’s growing list of try-scorers. But his celebrations were curtailed as he was left nursing a pulled hamstring for his efforts and had to be substituted.

Doha continued to surge forward, and with around ten minutes to go until half time they added another try through Conor Dunphy who produced a similarly impressive run from distance to make the score 31-0.

And so it stayed until half time, when coach Aaron Palmer made two changes before the teams came out for the second forty minutes.

Apart from personnel, not much changed in the second half, and Doha were able to sustain their attacking pressure and rack up more points against a struggling Kuwait.

Captain for the day, Liam Frost got the first of his two tries after a quickly taken penalty by Phil Cronin, and Beard was able to add the extra two points from the kicking tee.

With the score 38-0, Doha refused to rest on their laurels and continued to attack in waves.

Frost added his second of the match - and ninth of the season -after some neat interplay between himself and Colm Coyle.

Dominance at the scrum launched yet another attack and Scott Murray scored under the posts to leave Beard an easy conversion, taking the score to 52-0.Coyle was involved again as his audacious dummy sent the Kuwait defence the wrong way and he was able to add another five points to the scoreboard.Almost total domination of the set plays on both their own and their opponents’ ball gave Doha a perfect platform to continue attacking, and they duly obliged.Only a bizarre mistake from winger Ian O’Connor when over the line prevented him from adding to Doha’s total, when all he had to do was put the ball down to score.

Liddington then turned from hero to villain as he received a yellow card for striking an opponent, who also found himself in the sin bin for ten minutes.O’Connor added another try for Doha – this time deciding to place the ball down properly, before Murray ran over for his second of the match, and the home team’s eleventh try in a dominant performance, which ended 67-0.

The result sees Doha crowned victorious in the North Gulf Four competition, and leaves them in a strong position in the region’s main league, the Top Six.

And next weekend, Doha will be hoping to win three in three as they welcome the league leaders, Dubai Hurricanes to DRFC on Friday.

Penang to ban sports betting: Guan Eng

Penang: The Penang government has also followed in the footsteps of the Selangor government in banning sports betting in the state.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state government would be invoking Section 101(v) of the Local Government Act to prevent Ascot Sport Sdn Bhd, which has been given the licence to conduct sports betting activities in the country, from operating in Penang.

He said the two local authorities in the state - Penang Municipal Council and Sebarang Prai Municipal Council, would be instructed to enforce the ban.

He added that this was being done in the interest of public safety, health and convenience as the state government believed sports betting would have a negative impact on society.

Nehwal gets India's top sports honour

NEW DELHI: Indian badminton ace and world number two Saina Nehwal was awarded India's highest sporting honour on Friday.

Nehwal, 20, was named the recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award after a string of impressive performances that saw her become the first Indian to win a Super Series title when she triumphed at the 2009 Indonesia Open.

"I am really happy. It's unbelievable, a dream come true for me," she was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India.

"I have done well in the last two years and the three titles that I won recently have really boosted my confidence. I am now preparing for the World Championship and hope to win the title," she said.

Previous recipients of the award, which will be presented to Nehwal by President Pratibha Patil next month, include cricket superstar Sachin Tendulkar.- AFP

Sports betting: Opposition plans mass demo

Kuala Lumpur: Opposition political parties plan a mass street protest next month against a proposal to legalise sports betting which they fear will create more social ills, a PAS official said Thursday.

Supporters of a new licence for sports betting argue that it will add billions of dollars to government coffers, but critics have warned it will lead to an array of problems in mainly Muslim Malaysia.

"We have too many social problems - drug addiction, free sex and baby dumping," said Kamarulzaman Mohamad, youth secretary of the conservative Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party (PAS).

"Sports betting will add to our problems as most youths watch football.

They will be influenced to borrow money," he told AFP.

He said the opposition political parties will organise a mass protest march to the palace on July 3 to deliver a memorandum to the King against the new gaming licence.

Malaysia bans its majority Muslims from gambling but allows betting at a casino operated by Genting Group, on the national lottery and on horse-racing.

"There are already too many lottery draws in the country," veteran opposition lawmaker Lim Kit Siang said. The debate over sports betting erupted after Ascot Sports, a company controlled by influential tycoon Vincent Tan, said in May it had been granted a licence that will allow it to offer odds in time for the hugely popular English Premier League season.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had said no licence had been issued to the company and Umno leaders are divided over the issue.

Former Premier Mahathir Mohamad said he supported the awarding of the licence since non-Muslims are not banned from betting.

"Why should we restrict people from doing other things that are not against their religion?" he said.

Berjaya, the property-to-gaming group which has a 70 per cent state in Ascot Sports, has said the illegal sports betting market in Malaysia was worth RM20 billion a year.

Pahang Sign Seven New Faces To Beef Up Super League Squad

Kuantan - East Coast outfit Pahang who have targeted at least one title in the M-League this season, have signed up seven new faces to help their cause.

The seven are a mixture of young and senior players, signed from various teams that featured in the M-League last season.

Among the seven were R. Surendran and Mohd Zaiza Zainal Abidin from Selangor, Narulerwan Makmor and Munir Amran (Felda United), Mohd Faizol Hussain (Johor), Muhd Suffian Ab Rahman Kungi Raman (Sarawak) and Mohd Alafi Mahmud (PKNS).

Pahang Football Association vice president Datuk Dr Omar Othman was confident that the inclusion of the seven would help revive Pahang's football fortunes, especially after the former Malaysia Cup and Super League champion had suffered a run of poor form.

"The team under coach Dollah Salleh has shown good progress in a number of friendly matches since we beat T-Team 3-2, Pos Malaysia 2-1, Police 3-0 and Armed Forces 4-1. Our only defeat was to Selangor (1-2)," he said when met here Friday.

Pahang, a former powerhouse, had won the Malaysia Cup in 1983 and 1992 while setting history as the first team to win the inaugural Super League title in 2004.

The East Coast side had also won the Premier League title in 1987, 1992, 1995, 1999 and the FA Cup in 2006.

Pahang will kick off their Super League campaign this year against Perlis on Jan 29.

Pakistan keep Afridi as ODI captain

Pakistani selectors yesterday retained Shahid Afridi as captain for the upcoming one-day series against New Zealand, boosting his chances of leading the side in next month’s World Cup.

The selection committee kept Afridi on as captain in the finalised the 16-man squad, a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) release said.

Local media reports had said PCB chairman Ijaz Butt was ready to strip Afridi off the captaincy, angry at comments made by the all-rounder about three Pakistani cricketers at the centre of a spot-fixing scandal.

But the 30-year-old Afridi kept the role despite losing the Twenty20 series against New Zealand last month.

Misbah-ul-Haq, who led Pakistan in the two-Test series against New Zealand, will be Afridi’s deputy.

Veteran batsman Mohammad Yousuf was left out, raising fears the 36-year-old will not make the final World Cup squad.

Chief selector Mohsin Khan said Yousuf’s fitness and form were below par.

“We have selected the team with an eye on the World Cup,” Khan told AFP.

“Yousuf’s fitness and form was not up to the mark and he has not played much cricket recently.”
Wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, who was cleared by the PCB for selection after he too fell under the spotlight of the investigation into spot-fixing, was restored to the side for the New Zealand series.

Akmal has not been selected since the tour of England which ended in September last year and was marred by spot-fixing allegations which led to the suspensions of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer.

Former captain Shoaib Malik and Fawad Alam were overlooked.

The six-match one-day series, which starts in Wellington on January 22, will be Pakistan’s last before the World Cup which is to be jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh from February 19 to April 2.

Squad: Shahid Afridi (captain), Misbah-ul-Haq (vice captain), Mohammad Hafeez, Kamran Akmal, Younis Khan, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, Abdul Razzaq, Abdur Rehman, Saeed Ajmal, Shoaib Akhtar, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Sohail Tanveer, Tanveer Ahmed, Ahmed Shahzad.

Aussie morale high for S. Korea clash

By N.D. Prashant/DohaJustify Full
The floods in Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland, have also affected families and friends of some members of the Australian Asian cup squad.

But the catastrophe by no means has dampened the spirits of the team as they take on heavyweights South Korea in their Group C encounter here at the Gharafa Stadium today, according to skipper Lucas Neill.

“There are at least five players from Queensland, some born there, some raised there and some playing there. All of them are on the phone everyday and wondering if their family and others are safe,” said Neill, whose side won the opening encounter against India 4-0.

The skipper said the morale of the players, however, was still high.

“We are very focused on the job tomorrow night and this tragedy will give us determination to be successful against Korea.

“Once we are done with this match, we will have time to concentrate and conduct donation programmes. Through football, I hope we can do our bit to help people back home,” added Neill. The Australian Team have also been allowed by the AFC to wear special jerseys for the match to create awareness.

“This is a massive disaster; people have unfortunately died and a lot of them are missing. The floods look never-ending and this is a concern for our team. Our wishes are with our families and people back home and I hope we can do them proud. AFC has allowed us to wear the jersey with web address www.qld.gov.au/floods.

“We are hoping that people from all over the world will do their bit. Sometimes, football is not the biggest thing in the world and it’s not right to make people feel second best,” said Neill.

Both teams will observe a minute’s and the Australian players will be sporting black arm bands for the people who have lost their life. The 26th-ranked Australians and the 39th-ranked Koreans have progressed from the opening match with comfortable wins. And they will be fielding more or less the same team for this crunch outing. Against minnows India, it was job well done but it will be interesting to see how they tackle the Koreans. Australian coach Holger Osieck will be once again hoping that his forwards Harry Kewell and Tim Cahill repeat their performance of the opening match. Kewell and Cahill were exceptional against India and got their names on the scoreboard. The Everton star Cahill, in fact, scored twice.

“It’s no secret, we know about their individual strengths and the quality of Korean Republic players, but on the other hand we don’t have to hide. We also have quality players and it will be interesting to see tomorrow who will be in the best form,” said coach Holger Osieck on the eve of the encounter. South Korea, on the other hand, will be missing the services of their defender Kwak Tae-hwi, who was red-carded during his side’s 2-1 win over Bahrain on Monday.

“We have three players who can take Tae-hwi’s place. It will be difficult for us but one thing is for sure, all 23 players have a good understanding of how to approach the game with Australia,” said South Korean coach Cho Kwang Rae. Kwang Rae has also already identified Sasa Ognenovski as a weak link in the Australian line-up and was keen to exploit the lack of mobility in the big man at the central defence.

“We have identified Ognenovski as the one little bit weak in the defence line. Otherwise, I believe they are well organised in their defence and when they attack, they change flanks quickly and often and they have good players who can cross well and are good in general. We have prepared well with their strengths and weaknesses in mind,” said Kwang Rae.

Federer downs Davydenko to claim Qatar title

World number two Roger Federer began his season in formidable fashion by defeating holder Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4 to win the Qatar Open on Saturday.

The 16-times grand slam champion proved too much for his Russian opponent, claiming a break of serve in each set to complete victory under the floodlights at the Khalifa Tennis Complex in central Doha.

Federer has improved throughout his five matches this week in Qatar, where he did not drop a set, and sealed victory in 79 minutes when Davydenko netted an attempted backhand pass to huge cheers from a capacity crowd.

It was a 67th career title for the 29-year-old, who hardly broke a sweat on another warm evening in the tiny Gulf emirate and celebrated victory with a brief smile amongst little celebration.

The Swiss served impeccably throughout, dropping just nine points on his serve as he demonstrated his solid form ahead of defending his title at the Australian Open, which begins in Melbourne on Jan. 17.

“I’m very happy to kick-off the season today this way I think I played an amazing match. It will give me a lot of confidence for the remainder of the season,” said Federer, who will head to Australia for a week of practice.

Davydenko, who brushed aside world number one Rafa Nadal in the previous round, struggled on the back foot during the first set as Federer moved him around the court at will with precision depth groundstrokes.

The Russian, ranked 22 in the world after slipping from a career high third, battled hard throughout, saving six break points in the first set and charging down every ball but was always under pressure on his own serve.

“He played very well for sure, today was tough, he gave me no chance on the return,” Davydenko told reporters.

“I don’t want to say I played badly today, I played okay but Federer didn’t give me a chance to realize my game. I don’t know if he can hold at this level for the whole year.”

The second set was on serve until the ninth game when Federer broke Davydenko to love before serving out with ease to claim his third Qatar Open title and collect the trophy, an elaborate golden eagle sat on a perch with a picture of the Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani on the base. Ronaldo's 3 goals gives Madrid win over Villarreal

Cristiano Ronaldo hit a hat trick and Kaka scored his first goal since April as Real Madrid twice came from behind to win 4-2 against Villarreal on Sunday, keeping the team within two points of Spanish league leader Barcelona.

The Portugal forward made it 1-1 by side-footing home Mesut Oezil's pass in the ninth minute, two minutes after Villarreal midfielder Cani had flicked the ball over goalkeeper Iker Casillas to open the scoring.

Villarreal's slick passing game troubled Madrid, and Bruno Soriano's exquisite 18th-minute pass put Ruben Castro through alone on goal to lob Casillas for a 2-1 lead.

However, Ronaldo headed in Xabi Alonso's swerving free kick inside the crowded Villarreal area just before the break to equalize.

Ronaldo scrambled to recover a loose ball in the 79th right after blowing an excellent chance in front of goal. He then swiveled before tucking a low shot past goalkeeper Diego Lopez inside the near post for a league-leading 22nd goal.

Villarreal coach Juan Carlos Garrido was sent off by the referee for protesting against the goal, believing the referee missed two offside calls in the buildup.

Second-half substitute Kaka redirected Ronaldo's pass past Lopez for his first goal of the season three minutes later, causing his pumped-up coach Jose Mourinho to urge the Santiago Bernabeu stadium crowd on from the sidelines.

It was Madrid's fifth straight win and the team also has a perfect home record from nine games.

"A very tough game for us," Kaka said. "But in the end we managed another win that is very important for us."

On Saturday, defending champion Barcelona beat Deportivo La Coruna 4-0 to move to 49 points from 18 games.

Villarreal was the better side early on and Cani's deserved opener came after a well-played combination.

Soon after, Ronaldo capped a smart exchange between Oezil and Karim Benzema, who held four defenders close before passing to an unmarked Oezil and the Germany midfielder found Ronaldo alone at the far post for an easy goal.

Madrid began to find its rhythm after Ronaldo again equalized, the hosts imposing themselves after the restart.

Lopez saved from Benzema in the 58th before Ronado blew a one-on-one chance against Lopez in the 64th. While Madrid winger Angel Di Maria lost control moments later after running through the defense.

Mourinho brought on Kaka for defender Raul Albiol in the 70th to add an extra attacker, well aware that Madrid needed to win with Barcelona on a run of 12straight victories.

"I took a chance and brought Kaka on for Albiol," Mourinho said. "You can't wait to take a chance in a championship where the leader has lost only five points and second place seven. You have to go all out."

That chance paid off with Ronaldo coming to the rescue.

He initialy faltered after Lopez had spilled a cross right into his path, but he recovered to score his 30th goal in all competitions and 12th in six games.

Kaka's goal was his first in nine months. The Brazil playmaker recently returned from an injury that had sidelined him since the World Cup.

"To score a gol makes this a very nice night for me," the Brazil playmaker said. "It's special because it's been a long time since I scored a goal."

Mourinho had a water bottle thrown at him after celebrating Kaka's goal right in front of the Villarreal area, causing the visitors' bench to empty with players and offiials swarming on the sideline.

"I swear I went to celebrate with my son who was sitting behind the bench, and they thought I was trying to be provocative," Mourinho said.

Juanma Mata made up for missing a penalty and for hitting the crossbar from a free kick by scoring an 83rd-minute winner in Vaencia's 1-0 victory at crosstown rival Levante.

Valencia is fourth, two behind third-place Villarreal and four in front of fifth-place Espanyol.

Earlier, Espanyol snapped a three-game losing run and dropped Zaragoza into last place with a 4-0 win.

Pablo Osvaldo, Luis Garcia and Alvaro Vazquez score first-half goals and Sergio Garcia scored near the close to drop Zaragoza behind Almeria and Sporting Gijon on goal difference, with all three teams tied on 13 points in the relegation places.

Diego Castro scored during injury time for Sporting, which drew 1-1 at Racing Santander to extend its winless run to 11 games.

"I have the feeling I'm going to continue with the team," under-fire Sporting coach Manolo Preciado said.

Osasuna and Getafe drew 0-0 while Mallorca made up for its midweek Copa del Rey exit to Almeria with a 4-1 victory over the same opponent.

Getafe joined Atletico Madrid in sixth place, while Osasuna hasn't won in six rounds.

Valencia and Levante met in a city derby later Sunday, while Atletico Madrid is at Hercules on Monday.

Also Saturday, Sevilla rallied to beat Real Sociedad 3-2 and Athletic Bilbao drew 1-1 at Malaga.

Syria beats Saudi Arabia 2-1 at Asian Cup

Abdukarazak al-Hussein scored twice Sunday to lead Syria to a shock 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia in its opening group match at the Asian Cup, the team's first appearance in the tournament in 15 years.

Al-Hussein found the net in the 37th minute against the three-time Asian Cup winners at Al Rayyan Stadium, before Saudi Arabia substitute Taiseer al-Jassem equalized in the 60th.

Al-Hussein restored Syria's lead with a goal in the 62nd minute.

Syria leads Group B with three points, one more than Japan and Jordan, which drew 1-1 earlier Sunday at Qatar Sports Club Stadium.

"Frankly, I did not expect to win," Syria coach Valeriu Tita said. "The game was great and the players performance was very good."

The match was tight throughout, with Saudi Arabia's Nasser al-Shamrani having made the first real chance in the 28th minute. The striker collected a pass from Abdo Ateef but, with only goalkeeper Musab Balhous to beat, missed the target by a few yards.

Saudi Arabia equalized when Manaf Aboshgair's corner was headed in by al-Jassim. However, the Syrians launched a counterattack three minutes later that ended with al-Hussein's winning goal.

Saudi Arabia's official news agency said Jose Peseiro was fired as national team coach after the loss, with former coach Naser al-Johar appointed as his replacement.

Peseiro had defended his team's performance after the match and said the result was unjust.

"We did not deserve to lose, but we did and we are disappointed," said Peseiro, who took over the team in 2009. "I am disappointed with the result and, although our performance was not very good, it was also not very bad.

"They put their maximum into the match, they gave it their spirit and played with their hearts and not their heads sometimes."

Saudi Arabia last won the Asia Cup in 1996 but was runner-up in 2000 and in 2007.

Tita said the shock win over Saudi Arabia has raised expectations as to how far the 107th-ranked Syrians can go.

"This is just a start," Tita said. "There are two difficult matches coming and we have to prepare ourselves."

South Korea's Park hopes for triumphant swansong

Doha - Manchester United midfielder and South Korean skipper Park Ji-sung is keen to win the Asian Cup for his country after a lapse of 51 years and then hang up his boots in international football.

United manager Ferguson reluctantly let go of his in-form midfielder, who has suddenly got into the scoring act with six goals for the club so far this season and Park is keen to make his presence felt here in Doha.

"It will be a very special Asian Cup for me," he said on his arrival in Doha. South Korea is grouped with strong contenders Australia, Bahrain and India in Group C of the 16-team event.

Commenting on Australia, Park said, "They have showed what they got. The Australians play a European style of football. But we also have many players who are based in Europe so we are not afraid of them."

Apart from Park the other Koreans plying their trade in Europe and who are here are Park Chu-young, Lee Chung-yong, Ki Sung-yueng and Cha Du-ri and boosting the team further are Lee Young-pyo, Lee Jung-soo, Cho Yong-hyung, Kwak Tae-hwi, Kim Bo-kyung and Kim Jin-hyun who play for clubs in the Middle East and Japan.

"I do not have much time left in the international game. This makes me want to win the Asian Cup more than ever before," said Park, who has hinted that he would be quitting the international football scene soon.

Maradona may take up League offer

Buenos Aires - Diego Maradona said on Sunday he will fly to London next month to study an offer from an English Premier League club, Argentine media reported.

Argentina's two big dailies La Nacion and Clarin quoted Maradona as saying: "In February I'm going to England to listen to a firm offer.

"If they convince me, I may take it up," said the former Argentina coach during a visit to the Atlantic resort of Punta del Este in neighbouring Uruguay.

Maradona, 50, gave no indication of which club it might be. Clarin said sources close to Maradona were saying it was Fulham.

"I'm not desperate [but] I know that some day I'll be the coach again of some team," Maradona told a hastily convened news conference. Maradona has been out of work since his controversial exit as Argentina coach following his World Cup team's 4-0 rout by Germany in July in the quarter-finals of the South Africa tournament. Media have speculated since then on the 1986 World Cup-winning captain's future in coaching, with unconfirmed reports of offers including one from Aston Villa.

Beckham has Tottenham high hopes

London: David Beckham took a fitness test at Tottenham yesterday before starting his monthlong training stint with the Premier League club.

Despite talks collapsing over a two-month playing loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy, the midfielder and Spurs are still hopeful that a deal can be revived.

Beckham's spell with Spurs is due to end on February 10, with the Galaxy expecting the former England captain back to prepare for the Major League Soccer season opener at the Seattle Sounders on March 15.

After undergoing medical tests at Tottenham's training ground east of London, Beckham left inside two hours wearing a club tracksuit top and shorts.

Recall chances

The 35-year-old Beckham is hoping to play for Tottenham to boost his chances of being recalled to the England team, having made 115 appearances — the most by an England outfield player.

The Galaxy is reluctant to allow Beckham to go to Europe during a third consecutive Major League Soccer offseason, because of concerns he may get injured. An Achilles' tendon injury sustained while at AC Milan last March kept him out until September.

Lionel Messi wins Fifa world player award

Zurich - Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi won Fifa's Ballon d'Or award on Monday as the world's best player of 2010.

Messi won the trophy for a second straight year, finishing ahead of Barcelona teammates Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez.

"It's a very special day for me," Messi said through a translator on receiving the award at a gala ceremony in Fifa's home city.

The 23-year-old Messi helped an exciting Barcelona team retain its Spanish league title and lead the standings again this season.

Messi's trademark tricky play was often mesmerising and he scored 58 goals for the Catalan club in 2010. However, he had a disappointing World Cup in South Africa, failing to score. Iniesta and Xavi, by comparison, starred for eventual winner Spain.

"I didn't expect to win it today," Messi said. "Already it's a source of happiness to be here with my friends and even more to win it."

Messi obtained 22.65 percent of the votes cast by coaches and captains of national teams plus invited journalists. The original shortlist featured 23 players.

Andres Iniesta finished second with 17.36 percent and Xavi received 16.48 percent to finish third for the second straight year.

All three candidates learned their craft at Barcelona's La Masia youth academy.

Barcelona has now provided eight winners in the 20-year history of the Fifa honor. Messi follows former Brazilian internationals Romario (1994), Ronaldo (1996 and '97), Rivaldo (1999) and Ronaldinho (2004 and '05).

The award was renamed this year after Fifa merged its world player award with the Ballon d'Or trophy, which had been presented to the best player in Europe by France Football magazine since 1956.

Earlier, Jose Mourinho won the men's coach award for leading Inter Milan to a treble including the Champions League.

Mourinho beat World Cup-winning Spain coach Vicente del Bosque and Pep Guardiola of Barcelona to the inaugural honor. The Portuguese coach guided Inter to the Italian league and cup double before leaving to join Real Madrid.

Brazil forward Marta won the best women's player award for a fifth straight year, defeating Germany internationals Birgit Prinz and Kosovo-born Lira Bajramaj.

Marta was rewarded for her MVP season with United States women's professional league champion Gold Pride.

Silvia Neid won the inaugural women's coaching award for her work with the Germany national team, which defends its World Cup title at home in July. Also shortlisted were Maren Meinert, whose Germany Under-20 team was world champion in July, and Pia Sundhage, the Swedish coach of the United States' Olympic champions.

Do you agree that Messi was the best player of 2010? Is there someone else you feel should have recieved the award? Why? Tell us by posting a comment below.

Sarawak’s Tan heads Penang Sports Council

by Ting Tieng Hee

Kuching - Never mind serving another sports powerhouse state but renowned top sports psychologist from Sarawak Frederick Tan has embarked on another chapter in his career – this time as director of the Pulau Pinang State Sports Council (MSNPP or PSSC).

For the sports science specialist, it was a reunion with the state after ten years.

“I was in Pulau Pinang in 1999-2000 to help with their preparation for Sukma VIII. It had never crossed my mind that I would be picked for the job and I do feel very honoured to be tasked to lead Pulau Pinang sports,” he told Borneo Post in a telephone interview from Pulau Pinang yesterday.

Tan resigned from National Sports Institute (ISN) Sarawak Satellite Centre on Dec 31, 2010 and commenced work as MSNPP director on Jan 1 this year.

“I have been picked because of my years of working experience as a motivator, psychologist, course instructor able to run leadership camp for team-building and conduct mental toughness camp for elite athletes,” he added.

Tan headed the ISN Sarawak Satellite Centre, which was one of the pioneer centres for ISN pilot satellite centre project, since 2006.

Apart from helping the state contingent prepare for Sukma 2006-2010, Tan has also worked closely with the National Sports Council, Malaysia and National Sports Institute, Malaysia with high commitment, dedication, passion and discipline.

He has also worked with top world-class national athletes like shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei, keglers; hockey team; Kata team; basketball team and many more.

Tan also has vast experience in running development programmes.

While helming the ISN Sarawak Satellite Centre, he worked very closely with the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSN), State Education Department, professionals like Dr Ong Kong Swee and Dr Chin Hon Siong and officials from sports associations.

“I would like to personally thank MSNS director Francis Nyurang Ding for giving me and the satellite centre his fullest support during my time of service in Kuching,” said Tan.

Nyurang said he felt happy for Tan with his appointment as MSNPP director and wished him all the best in his new undertaking.

“I am also proud that a fellow Sarawakian has been appointed to lead the MSNPP and I believe he is a capable person for the job,” he said.

It was understood that Tan will be replaced by sports physiologist Joshua Philip.

“I will continue to render my support and cooperation to Joshua and I believe the team of sports experts at the satellite centre will do likewise,” said Nyurang.

Kaka returns to Real Madrid squad

Madrid - Brazilian attacking midfielder Kaka, who has been out since the start of the season, was on Sunday named in the Real Madrid squad for yesterday’s trip to Getafe by coach Jose Mourinho.

“Kaka won’t start, he can’t yet,” said Mourinho at a press conference.

“He can give us 15 or 20 minutes of his very great quality, but no more.”

The playmaker, who won the 2007 Ballon d’Or, underwent surgery in August after injuring his left knee and only returned to training with the squad on Dec 18.

“I’m very happy today,” Kaka wrote on his Twitter account.

“After a long period, I’m back with my team-mates, for the game tomorrow (today). Thanks Lord.”

Prior to his injury, Kaka had struggled to shine due to a combination of injuries and poor form.

The 28-year-old joined Real from AC Milan for around 65 million euros in June 2009, shortly before the arrival of Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo. — AFP
