Old boy Sanchez aims to dent Real title bid

MADRID (AFP) – Hugo Sanchez became a legend at Real Madrid in seven trophy-laden seasons but on Sunday the Mexican will put sentiment aside as his Almeria side look for a first ever win at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Legendary striker Sanchez starred for Real between 1985 and 1992, winning five league titles and four ‘Pichichi’ (top goalscorer) crowns, but now he wants to get one over on his old club.

"It will be emotional to return to Real Madrid but I have to put my job first and we will go for the three points," said Sanchez.

"I would like to make Almeria history by winning at the Bernabeu for the first time."

The only problem for Sanchez, and Almeria, is that Real can afford no slip-ups as they look to close the six-point gap to frontrunners Barcelona.

Juande Ramos’s side may have crashed out of Europe but they have won 11 of their last 12 games to stay on Barca’s heels and French midfielder Lass Diarra believes they are capable of winning all their remaining fixtures to snatch the league title.

"There is a positive atmosphere in the squad," said Diarra.

"Our goal is to win the title by winning every game. We are very much alive and I think we can catch up with Barcelona. I am convinced we are capable of winning all our matches."

Having halved a one-time 12-point gap to Barca, Real have just the league on which to focus while their arch-rivals must also focus on the Kings Cup final and the Champions League.

Barca manager Pep Guardiola rested Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry last weekend in the 2-0 win over Almeria as he tries to keep his stars fresh for the key final few months of the season.

Bojan Krkic, 18, scored both goals against Almeria but admits it is difficult to force his way into Barca’s star-studded line-up.

"It is not easy to get a game when you have Eto’o, (Lionel) Messi and Henry in front of you. They are three of the best players in the world," said Bojan.

Malaga are the visitors at Camp Nou on Sunday, and are looking to claim another big scalp. The promoted side have surprised everyone this season and are only two points off the Champions League spots.

Atletico Madrid are level on points with Malaga after a morale-boosting 3-2 win over Villarreal last time out and aim to build on that success at strugglers Real Mallorca on Sunday.

Uruguayan international Diego Forlan has scored more than any other player in 2009 with nine league goals taking his tally to 19 – just four behind the league’s top-scorer Samuel Eto’o.

"I didn’t expect to score so many goals in Spain because it is a tough league," confessed Forlan. "I am quite far away (from Eto’o) and I don’t really set targets. I just keep on working hard."

Villarreal need to make amends for the defeat to Atletico and they host Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

Sevilla are well positioned in third six points ahead of Villarreal and want to consolidate their lead at home to Valladolid on Saturday.

For Valencia the Champions League dream is rapidly disappearing with the 2004 champions falling five points off the top four after one win in their last eight league matches.

Unai Emery’s side travel to an improving Racing Santander outfit on Sunday needing a win to take the spotlight off their well-publicised financial problems.

Osasuna and Espanyol have other troubles as they fight to stay in the league and the two bottom sides meet on Sunday in a crucial relegation showdown. Espanyol prop up the table four points behind second from bottom Osasuna.

Fixtures

Saturday

Villarreal v Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla v Valladolid

Sunday

Real Madrid v Almeria, Racing Santander v Valencia, Getafe v Recreativo Huelva, Osasuna v Espanyol, Deportivo La Coruna v Real Betis, Numancia v Sporting Gijon, Barcelona v Malaga, Real Mallorca v Atletico Madrid

Wenger backs Ferguson in fixture row

LONDON (AFP) – Arsene Wenger has backed Sir Alex Ferguson’s claim that the Premier League fixture list is unfair and should be changed.

Ferguson has been highly critical this week of the scheduling that has led to his Manchester United side playing a majority of weekend Premier League games away from home following a midweek Champions League clash.

Wenger took the unusual step of agreeing with his longstanding rival after his Arsenal team’s 3-1 FA Cup third round victory over Plymouth Argyle at the Emirates Stadium here Saturday.

The Gunners boss believes Ferguson has a case – and pointed to the imbalance of home fixtures across the four Champions League teams to reinforce his claim.

"I saw Ferguson made the case about fixtures," Arsenal manager Wenger said. "And we checked because we are always curious. And he has a case, and in this case so do we.

"If you take the international fixtures plus the Champions League, everybody has played ten games, six Champions League games and four internationals.

"And after those 10 games, we played eight away games and two at home. Manchester United played nine away games, Chelsea played six games at home and four away. And Liverpool played eight times at home and two away.

"You could argue the biggest disadvantage is not the Champions League but the international games when some of your players play a Wednesday night in Mexico and they cannot even play on Saturday if you kick-off early."

Wenger said the only solution was to change the Premier League fixture list to match the international and Champions League schedules.

"I would think the way to do it is if you play 10 games after Champions League or internationals then everybody plays five games at home and five away.

"But you have some teams playing eight or nine away and some teams playing eight at home, that is not really a fair competition.

"That is an unfair advantage and that explains a lot. In that case I stand alongside Ferguson."

Wenger said he felt a sense of relief after Arsenal saw off Championship side Plymouth thanks to two goals from Robin van Persie and a David Gray own-goal.

Dutch striker van Persie was made captain for the day in the absence of goalkeeper Manuel Almunia and the injured Cesc Fabregas even though former skipper William Gallas was in the starting line-up.

"He is always interested in team problems and team affairs and he wants to help sort things out," Wenger said of van Persie. "In today’s team he was the longest servant of the club and he did well.

"I believe he is one of the players who show how well you can have an evolution. When you consider how he was when he came here and who he is today, he has evolved well.

"Not many would have believed he would be captain when he arrived here."

Arsenal’s injury problems got worse when defender Mikael Silvestre was forced out after just 30 minutes with a thigh problem that should keep him out for three weeks.

Meanwhile, Wenger denied reports that Arsenal had received an offfer for centre-back Kolo Toure, who missed this match with a groin problem.

But he did say he might have to review his transfer priorities during the January window after these latest injuries.

"I have to look at it at the moment," he conceded. "At the moment with the injuries we have we are a bit short everywhere.

"Kolo I hope will not be out for a long time. He has an inflamed groin but Gael Clichy should be back next week."

700km in one day. But is the Ferrari fast?

On the final day of this test session at Jerez, on Feb 13 Ferrari had racked up over 700km in testing, and overall had put the car through a rigorous program which the car has thus far done flawlessly and without any reliability problems. However, the same question still remains. Is the new Ferrari F10 single-seater faster than the rest?

Ferrari has been happy with the reliability, but suggested that because of the very varied testing programs and fuel loads people were running it would be impossible to know who is really the leader. In fact, at the first test in Valencia Spain Ferrari had topped the time sheets on all three days,

but in Jerez it was a different story. On the last day of testing Felipe Massa finished 7th out of the fastest recorded times for the day with a 1:21.485. That’s nearly two seconds slower than 1.19.684 seconds recorded by Mclaren’s Luis Hamilton.

“For sure we can say that we’ve got a reliable car, but it’s much too early for the rest, although I really hope so. The one who

does the best work, day after day on the track and at home, wins the title. I’m not the most important thing here. What counts is that we know that we’ve got a fast and constant car.”

Still, Felipe was proud of what Ferrari had achieved. “We’ve never driven 700 kilometres in just one day,” said the Brazilian.

Felipe also made it clear that he is back in top form and ready to compete for the title; “Physically I feel well, I actually thought that I might be more tired than I am. I’m pleased by the work we’ve done today, because we could test the car under all conditions. I’m happy for myself and the team: we concluded the foreseen programme and there is lots of data to analyse over the upcoming days, so we can prepare ourselves the best possible way for the next test session, without any particular problems. The only stop I had doesn’t worry me at all, because we know what caused it. I think we’re heading in the right direction, but we’re aware of the fact that there’s still lots of work ahead of us.”

Ferrari will return to testing on Wednesday the 17th as F1 teams continue their schedule at the Spanish track.

Mature United please Ferguson

MILAN, Italy (AFP) – Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson praised his team’s growing maturity after they dominated Serie A leaders Inter Milan in a 0-0 Champions League draw.

The only down side of United’s performance in the San Siro on Tuesday night was the failure to convert one of their numerous chances, particularly in a first half in which there seemed to be a gulf in class between the two teams.

It left Ferguson disappointed to be going back to Old Trafford in two weeks time with the tie still finely in the balance.

But the 67-year-old boss said the game did at least show that United have come a long way in the last two years since they were given a footballing lesson by Inter’s San Siro housemates AC Milan.

"I’m disappointed we didn’t win the match but it’s only half time in a way and we’re going to Old Trafford," said Ferguson.

"We came here two years ago and you can see the development of the team. In our immaturity we were swamped by AC Milan that night but you saw the maturity (against Inter), the team is improving."

Two years ago United had won a thrilling semi-final first-leg clash 3-2 at Old Trafford but were simply swept away in the return as a Kaka-inspired Milan cantered to a 3-0 victory.

That result came only a couple of years after United had also gone out to Milan in the second round having lost 1-0 both home and away.

However, he admitted that a 0-0 draw away from home in the first leg always presented a risk in the return.

The last time United were champions of Europe they fell at the first knock-out round the following year having drawn 0-0 away to Real Madrid.

That was followed by a dreadful defensive display in the home leg which saw United fall 3-0 behind at Old Trafford before fighting back to eventually lose 3-2 on the night and on aggregate.

But Ferguson pointed to last season’s semi-final against Barcelona for a more contemporary example of United’s response to a 0-0 first leg draw away from home.

"What you’re seeing in the team is maturity. There’s always a threat at home that you can lose a goal and that’s a threat if you don’t score away," he said.

"We didn’t score gainst Barcelona either and we were playing a fantastic Barcelona team at Old Trafford."

But a single goal from Paul Scholes was enough to see United through to the final, which they won dramatically on penalties against Chelsea.

"Our concentration in that game (against Barca) was fantastic and that’s what we will need to be (against Inter), concentrated and focused. I think we’ll be ok with that.

"I think they will play more condensed, tighter. They will go back to their penalty box."

And while Ferguson praised his team he also seemed to be enjoying another battle with Mourinho.

Ferguson smirked when reminded about Mourinho’s pre-match assertion that United would come to defend, and his claim after the match that Spanish referee Luis Medina Cantalejo had favoured the visitors.

"I thought it was a marvellous performance from the referee, he wasn’t intimidated and that’s what Jose was hoping for but the referee wasn’t intimidated, I thought he was first class," said Ferguson.

"I think Jose new full well what we were going to do. He tells you (the press) one thing and his players another.

"He knew full well we were going to attack, he knows our club and our philosophy."

Mancini tells City to keep up United standard

Roberto Mancini has urged his Manchester City players to put their midweek League Cup disappointment behind them when Premier League strugglers Portsmouth visit Eastlands on Sunday.

Mancini and his squad have been licking their wounds since Wednesday’s crushing semi-final defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, but the Italian has been making a good job of hiding his hurt in the hope that this will give his players the lift they need.

Mancini says he was proud of his side and believes City will have no trouble in securing Champions League qualification for the first time if they can maintain the same levels that saw them push Sir Alex Ferguson’s men to the very limit.

Mancini said: “That game is now in the past, but after the game on Wednesday we still feel that we are strong.

“United scored late and won the game, but we still think we played very well. For us, the most important thing is that we did well and showed that we can win. I’m happy about that, but disappointed for the players.

“But now it’s in the past and we must think about the next game. We need to keep up the same level of performance. If we can do this and win the next three games in front of us then we know we have a good chance of getting fourth place.

“If we continue to play like we did against United then we will be fine. Okay, we lost to United but that is football. We played well.

“The important thing was that in two games we played at the same level as United. I am pleased with that. Now we have to focus on the game on Sunday, which is very important. We want to win and we must win.”

Mancini welcomes back Kolo Toure from African Cup of Nations duty, while Emmanuel Adebayor could be in line for his first start since his ill-fated departure for the same tournament with Togo.

Former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira remains sidelined with a calf injury, however, but Mancini believes he will be fit to make his debut against Hull next weekend and bring an end to supporters’ fears that his signing might have been a gamble that has backfired.

Portsmouth could well represent cannon fodder to City as the club’s financial troubles show no sign of easing. It was not even certain that Avram Grant would still be their manager for Sunday’s match, such is the depth of the turmoil at Fratton Park.

The players have once again been forced to wait for their wages for the fourth time in succession, while Grant and chief executive Peter Storrie have accused the club of trying to sell players without consulting them both.

Storrie has decided against walking out on the club but admits he and Grant have plenty of cause to consider their futures.

He said: “We are both angry, frustrated and fed up, but neither of us are quitters. I don’t intend to quit now I’ve slept on it and although I cannot speak for Avram, from what we have talked about I don’t think he will quit either. And, let’s face it, we both have good reason to walk out.

“I am no longer involved in the finances, I am not involved in the transfer negotiations and Avram doesn’t know what players are being sold.”

The duo’s anger surfaced when Portsmouth opened negotiations with Tottenham to sell defender Younes Kaboul and goalkeeper Asmir Begovic without their knowledge.

It is understood the club are waiting to receive payment from Tottenham for the Kaboul deal before they can cover this month’s staff wages.

In the meantime, Grant will welcome midfielder Jamie O’Hara back into his side for the trip to Eastlands.

O’Hara has returned to Fratton Park on-loan from Tottenham until the end of the season, although Grant is still waiting for Kanu, Nadir Belhadj and Hassan Yebda to return from the African Cup of Nations. MANCHESTER, England (AFP)
