Batista succeeds Maradona in Argentina

Sergio Batista was appoined as coach of Argentina on Tuesday, just over three months after Diego Maradona departed in the wake of the country's loss to Germany in the World Cup quarterfinals.

Batista had been the acting coach since Maradona's contract was not renewed in late July and his appointment to a four-year contract by theArgentine Football Association was widely expected. In charge for three matches, he has won two, including a 4-1 victory over World Cup winner Spain. The only blemish was a 1-0 loss last month against Japan.

Batista's first match as the permanent coach will be Nov. 17 against archrival Brazil in Doha, Qatar. The team for the match was also announced Tuesday, headed by Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

Batista, who turns 48 next week, was Maradona's teammate and a defensive midfielder on the 1986 team that won the World Cup. A youth coach for the Argentine Football Association, his name began to take on a higher profile after leading Argentina to the gold medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

The new coach seems to have the support of stars like Messi, who also spoke favorably about Maradona's 21 months in charge. In that period, Argentina won 18 of 24 games but also suffered shock losses including a 6-1 hammering at Bolivia in a World Cup qualifier. The 4-0 loss to Germany in the quarterfinals was humiliating for one of football's most fervent nations and two-time champions.

Maradona still has his supporters and, as recently as last week, said in an interview he expected to return one day as the national team coach.

"It is my destiny," said Maradona, who turned 50 on Saturday.

Maradona and Batista have a frosty relationship, although Maradona said he would support the national team - no matter who was in charge.

"Above everything else, I'm an Argentine," he said.

Batista dodged one of his first questions after being named, declining to talk about the Maradona era.

"We begin a new stage now," he said. "I don't look back. I'm not going to talk about the past - I have no reason to. There is a lot of work until 2014 and I have to worry about this. I don't like to speak about other things that are not about football."

He did not hesitate to talk about bringing Argentina its third World Cup title.

"I hope I don't let this opportunity get away," he said. "And in 2014 I want to be able to win what everyone wants."

Maradona's continued influence was clear last week when he stood next to Argentina President Cristina Fernandez at the funeral of her husband, former Argentina president Nestor Kirchner. Maradona embraced Fernandez and spent an hour at her side as they both caressed Kirchner's coffin.

The former No. 10, regarded as one of the game's greatest players, is a larger-than-life icon in Argentina who beat cocaine and alcohol addiction. But he wore out his welcome as coach in some quarters, fielding a team that was up-and-down and often lacked tactical discipline.

Maradona made his exit in late July after he declined to fire members of his coaching staff to keep his job, a condition imposed by AFA president Julio Grondona for renewing the contract. It was Grondona who hired Maradona and who also picked Batista, a choice rubber-stamped by an AFA selection committee.

Since being let go, Maradona has recanted and said he would consider hiring new assistants. But his name never seemed to be in consideration among the coaches mentioned as possibilities: Alejandro Sabella of Estudiantes, Miguel Angel Russo of Racing Club and Carlos Bianchi, who is without a club.

Batista keeps a lower profile than Maradona. His first job will be to win next year's continental championship - the Copa America - which is hosted by Argentina. Brazil and Argentina are the initial favorites, but they will face competition from powerful World Cup qualifiers like Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile.

After lobbying to include cricket, India opts out

Having lobbied to get cricket into the Asian Games, regional power India has decided against sending a team to Guangzhou due to a dispute over the quality of players available for selection.

The decision by the Board of Contrl for Cricket in India (BCCI) was a disappointment for games officials, India's Olympic Association and a setback in the sport's bid to spread its international reach via multi-sports events.

"The Asian Cricket Council worked really hard to get cricket included in the Asian Games but the Indian cricket bord's decision is very disappointing," Indian Olympic Association secretary-general Randhir Singh said of the BCCI's decision.

Given the crowded cricket calendar - India is currently hosting a test series against New Zealand after playing two home tests against Australia while India was hosting the Commonwalth Games last month - it was always going to be difficult for the test-ranked Asian cricket nations to send first-choice squads to the Asian Games.

However, India elected to not even send a second-string squad despite its depth of talent, whereas Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will all send teams to elp cricket make its debut in Guangzhou.

In the absence of a consensus about the quality of the team - Indian Olympic Association officials wanted top-class players - the BCCI announced it would not send teams to contest either the men's or the women's championship.

Bangladesh will be among the favorites for the Asian Games gold. While its team was not a first-choice lineup, it was expected to be the better of the teams from the other major Asian cricket nations.

Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates - two nations where cricket is improving - along with host China and Oman will be contenders for medals at the newly-built Guangdong University of Technology Stadium, where the pitch is being prepared by Bangladesh groundsman Jashim Uddin.

"It's been a tough road. But for a first-time effort, the facilities are excellent," Uddin was quoted as saying by The Hindu newspaper last month.

India has previously participated in cricket at multi-sports events. It took part in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Malaysia, when the BCCI split the top players between the Kuala Lumpur event and a series against Pakistan being played in Canada.

Sachin Tendulkar, regarded as India's greatest player, was in that Commonwealth Games squad but India was still no match for other full-strength sides. South Africa beat Australia in the final, with New Zealand taking the bronze medal.

However, cricket was not included in 2010 Commonwealth Games, held in New Delhi, due to BCCI reluctance.

The non-inclusion in the Commonwealth Games, and India's lack of participation in these Asian Games, will hurt efforts to have Twenty20 cricket included in the Olympic Games.

Without a presence in such multi-sports events, or the backing of the BCCI - which is financial powerbase of international cricket - it will be more difficult to have nations such as China keep up efforts to develop their own cricket programs.

China hoping to control weather for Asian Games

China is armed and ready to stave off a perceived threat to the Asian Games: rain.

Five planes and more than 1,000 rockets have been prepared to disperse storm clouds that threaten the Nov. 12-27 event in the southern city of Guangzhou, according to Huang Minhui, spokesman for the provincial meteorological bureau.

"The weather is usually sunny this time of year, but we're not taking any chances," Huang told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Thursday.

Although most foreign experts consider weather modification an inexact science at best, Chinese authorities claim to have scored major successes in the field.

Its weather modification arsenal includes 6,781 artillery guns and 4,110 rocket launchers dispersed throughout the country to shoot dry ice or silver oxide into storm clouds with the aim of making it rain when and where needed.

In particular, Chinese meteorologists say they succeeded in keeping rain away from the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Olympic Games in the capital Beijing.

Yet even Chinese scientists acknowledge a lack of rigorous testing on the effects of cloud seeding, and information about the national rain creating program is a tightly kept secret.
