Next race to be tough - Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton expects the gap between his McLaren team and Brawn GP to grow in the next Formula 1 race in Malaysia.

The world champion secured a surprise third behind Brawn GP pair Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

"I think Malaysia is going to be even harder because the car is incredibly tough to drive at the moment," he said.

"There probably will be a bigger difference between us and the Brawn car. We'll be a little further behind."

After finishing second in the constructors' championship last year, the Mercedes-powered outfit are off the pace so far this season.

A determined drive from Hamilton, combined with a collision between Sebastian Vettel and Robert Kubica and a time penalty for Jarno Trulli secured third place for the British driver from 18th on the grid.

Gearbox troubles had hindered his qualification and he struggled in Friday's two practice sessions, finishing 16th and 18th.

Hamilton admitted that six points was a far-better haul than he had expected to take from the Melbourne circuit.

"Going into this weekend I knew we could have a race weekend where we didn't get any points," he said.

"We've had some serious challenges over the last three years, and this is another big one for us, if not the biggest.

"But like I've said from the beginning, if anyone can do it, we can. I've got a huge amount of belief in this team."

Hamilton has targeted the third race of the season for his Woking-based team to start closing on Brawn and is drawing hope from rivals Ferrari's start to last season.

"Ferrari only got one point from the first race last year, but they came back and were strong later on. Hopefully by China and from then on we will be a little bit closer," he said.

Three-time F1 world champion Sir Jackie Stewart said Hamilton will have learned a lot from Melbourne.

"This is a really good object lesson for Lewis. He had to come from the back," Stewart told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"You have got to keep your head down and have a bit of luck. I once won a race coming from sixth and never passed a car - it happens once or twice in your career and you just thank your luck."

Kallio expects to maintain form in race

By Matt Beer

Pramac Ducati team boss Paolo Campinoti reckons Mika Kallio's strong run in the Jerez qualifying simulation proves his squad can join the front-runners this year.

The Finnish 250cc graduate was as high as fourth early in today's televised session, and ended up an impressive sixth.

The team was heavily reorganised in the middle of last year, with the departure of long-time team manager Luis D'Antin, and Campinoti believes the outfit is now significantly stronger.

"What to say? It seems like we have started the season well," he said. "We have renovated our structure and things are turning in the right direction for us. We are really satisfied.

"After the results of this test it seems like we will be able to be amongst the protagonists during this season."

Kallio is also confident of maintaining his strong form in the races.

"Together with my technical director, Fabiano Sterlacchini, we have put together all the positive things we found and we had an almost perfect bike," he said.

"I still lose too much time in the last sector otherwise we could have finished in an even better position. We are doing great work and I believe we can keep up the good work also in the first race in Qatar."

But while Kallio was delighted, his team-mate Niccolo Canepa continued to struggle for pace and was only 18th, 1.4 seconds slower.

"Niccolo has found too many difficulties," said Campinoti. "He has to stay calm, we know his true value and we will do everything possible to put him in the best situation to perform at his best."

Former factory Ducati test rider Canepa vowed not to become downcast about his poor winter form.

"I hope in Qatar things will go better," he said. "I can guarantee I will keep my morale high and never give up."

Brawn GP to shed around 270 jobs

By Pablo Elizalde

Australian Grand Prix winner Brawn GP will make around 270 members of its staff redundant this year.

The team, saved by an 11th-hour buyout led by Ross Brawn, will be reducing its staff by a third in order to return to 2004 levels, when the squad was known as BAR, before Honda bought it.

Brawn led a successful management buyout less than a month ago to keep the team alive, but the Brackley-based outfit is unlikely to have the same budget it had when owned by Honda.

Most F1 teams have made, or will be making, staff redundant as a result of the in-season testing ban and the need to reduce costs.

"It's about 270 (jobs)," the team's CEO Nick Fry told Reuters. "We are about 700 people at the moment and we talked to the staff about going down to about 430, something like that, which is where we were in 2004.

"It's very unfortunate that we've got to do that but it's the change of technical regulations and obviously we are now a private team."

Despite the uncertainty over its future, Brawn GP dominated its maiden race on Sunday, with Jenson Button leading team-mate Rubens Barrichello to a one-two victory.

Ferrari boss expects Malaysia fightback

By Michele Lostia and Pablo Elizalde

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo is adamant the Italian squad will react at this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix following a dismal start to the season in Australia.

Ferrari endured its worst start to a season since 1992, with Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen both retiring with mechanical problems.

The team's boss Stefano Domenicali admitted after the race that his main concern was the lack of pace, and not the F60's reliability issues.

Di Montezemolo believes, however, that Ferrari will show its real strengths in Malaysia this weekend.

"I expect to see the real strengths of the teams on a less strange circuit than Melbourne, as is the Malaysian track," Di Montezemolo was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I think the first race has gone a lot worse than what we and I had expected.

"There's no doubt we're paying the price for the 2008 championship, which ended at the last turn of the last lap of the last race. We, like McLaren, had to develop the car to the end, while the others were already able, for several months, to work on a completely new project. Let's not forget that this year's car isn't an evolution.

"So, those who had the time has been able to gain an even bigger advantage."

He added: "I think we made a few mistakes too many in Australia, and most of all I expect to see the real strengths of the teams in Malaysia. I'm convinced, in fact I'm totally sure, that there will be a strong reaction, even though the cars are the same."

The Ferrari chief also urged the FIA to clarify the diffuser regulations quickly in order to have a more level playing field.

"I expect clarity over the regulations. It's not good to start a season with such important question marks," the Italian said.

"Either these diffusers are legal, so it must be said and proved quickly, even though we and many other teams don't think they are, and we'll adapt; otherwise they aren't legal, so in this case too they must say so as soon as possible, because who interprets the regulations and isn't going by the rules creates an difference in performance which isn't good.

"This is what I'm expecting to happen as soon as possible, and I know that all the people at Ferrari will work on it in the next days."

Brawn GP take dramatic one-two victory in Melbourne

Not since the French Grand Prix in 1954 has a team new to Formula One racing finished one-two on their debut. That day it was Juan Manuel Fangio and Karl Kling for Mercedes-Benz. This afternoon it was Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello for Brawn-Mercedes after an extraordinary ‘race of two halves’ in Australia.

Button led from pole as Barrichello bogged down when his car activated its anti-stall device, and the Brazilian was then embroiled in a first-corner clash with BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld, Red Bull’s Mark Webber, Force India's Adrian Sutil and McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen.

Button streaked away from Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull, Robert Kubica’s BMW Sauber, Nico Rosberg’s Williams and the Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen. But the face of the race changed on Lap 19 when Kazuki Nakajima crashed his Williams heavily, bringing out the safety car until the end of the 24th lap.

By then Button had watched a 47.7s lead reduced to nothing, and began to struggle to generate heat in his tyres. But he got his head down and opened a gap to Vettel again. As the Ferraris faded, Kubica found his BMW Sauber getting better and better on the harder Bridgestone tyre and gradually began to put Vettel, on the softer option tyre, under serious pressure in the closing stages.

Going into Turn Three on the 55th lap - with three left to run under a setting sun which made driving conditions very difficult - Kubica got alongside Vettel but they touched. Both spun, but continued. But not for long. Vettel had lost his front wing and crashed heavily just as Kubica, further down the road, did the same thing. Out came the safety car again.

Incredibly, that melee had promoted Barrichello back to the second place, despite his first-lap incident and a later touch with Raikkonen which damaged his Brawn’s front wing. It was changed during his first pit stop on the 18th lap. As the race finished under the safety car, he admitted that he had never expected a one-two after all his dramas.

Jarno Trulli started from the pit lane after Toyota’s rear wing infringement yesterday, but hauled through to take the final podium finish, while a very determined drive brought a hugely valuable fourth place for McLaren's Lewis Hamilton. The world champion was briefly third in the dying stages after Trulli ran off track behind the safety car, before the Italian subsequently retook the place - an infringement which prompted stewards to subsequently add 25s to his race time, later dropping him to 12th.

In the second Toyota Timo Glock came home fifth. The German survived a spin while battling from his own pit lane start, when he and Fernando Alonso tangled.

The Spaniard brought his Renault home sixth, while seventh place came as a bitter disappointment to Rosberg. The German was running fourth with six laps to go and had set fastest lap, but had used up his Bridgestone option tyres and was simply in no position to defend the place. By the finish he had rookie Sebastien Buemi thirsting after him as Toro Rosso’s Swiss driver scored a point for eighth place on his debut.

Neither of the Ferraris finished. Both struggled with tyre wear, and as Massa suffered a mechanical problem late in the race, Raikkonen spun and subsequently retired.

Sebastien Bourdais was ninth in the second Toro Rosso, ahead of Adrian Sutil, who survived a brush with Force India team mate Giancarlo Fisichella. They were separated by Heidfeld, who was consigned to a recovery race after the first corner fracas, while Fisichella further delayed himself by missing his pit marks in his first stop.

Webber, another in recovery mode, was the final classified finisher, ahead of Vettel, Kubica, and Raikkonen. The retirements were Massa, Nelson Piquet who spun his Renault after the first safety car restart, Nakajima and Kovalainen.

Button’s great victory marked the 200th for a British driver.

"It's not just for me but for the whole team,” he said, “a fairy tale ending really to the first race of our career together and I hope we can continue this way. We are going to fight every way we can to keep this car competitive and at the front. This has got to continue and this is where we want to be. Bring on Malaysia!”

FOA issues media statement

Formula One Administration Limited (‘FOA’), the commercial rights holder of Formula One, wishes to clarify and correct inaccurate and misleading statements made to the media yesterday by “FOTA”:

In particular FOTA claimed that monies are owed by CVC (FOA’s controlling shareholder) to the teams for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Championship seasons. Neither CVC nor FOA owes any amount to any team.

The contract between the commercial rights holder and the teams competing in Formula One, the so-called Concorde Agreement, expired at the end of 2007. All prize fund entitlements payable to the signatory teams under that arrangement were paid when due.

FOA has made new contracts with various teams currently competing in the FIA Formula One World Championship on an individual basis, whereby the team has committed to participate in the Championship for an agreed period in return for which FOA has agreed to pay a share of an annual prize fund generated from and calculated with reference to its profits. Each of these teams has been paid its full prize fund entitlement to date.

A few teams have yet to enter into a contract with FOA concerning their participation in the Championship, notwithstanding which FOA has made substantial payments to each of them on account of future prize fund entitlements they will have when they sign a contract, demonstrating FOA’s goodwill and intent to conclude a new arrangement with them.

FOA welcomes that the teams are engaging in constructive discussions to progress a new Concorde Agreement that will encompass all teams. FOA looks forward to finalising and concluding that contract with the teams in the coming weeks, at which time they will be paid whatever their entitlement will be under the new arrangement.

FOA has no relationship with FOTA. It has always had a direct relationship with teams and will continue to do so.

Trulli loses podium for safety car infringement

Toyota’s Jarno Trulli has lost his third place in Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix after stewards penalized him for passing under the safety car in the closing laps.

Trulli ran off road near the end of the race, thus losing a place to McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, but then repassed the world champion once he had rejoined the circuit.

The Italian was given a 10-second stop-go penalty as a result, but since the offence occurred within the final five laps that was translated into a 25-second penalty added to his race time. He thus drops to 12th.

"I can't say how disappointed I am to finish third but have the result questioned," he said. "When the safety car came out towards the end of the race Lewis passed me but soon after he suddenly slowed down and pulled over to the side of the road. I thought he had a problem so I overtook him as there was nothing else I could do."

Bayern, Wolfsburg pressure Hertha

Bayern Munich beat Karlsruhe 1-0 to close the gap behind league leaders Hertha Berlin, who were humbled in Stuttgart, although they were without injured strikers Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose. Bayern welcomed back Franck Ribery, who had been suffering with a shin injury, and the French midfield maestro made his mark in the 34th minute when he split the Karlsruhe defence to set up Argentina striker Jose Ernesto Sosa.

Sosa was partnering Lukas Podolski up front for Bayern, with both Toni and Klose suffering from ankle injuries. He took his chance by darting through the penalty area to drill Ribery's pass under Karlsruhe goalkeeper Markus Miller. Bayern had Brazilian midfielder Ze Roberto to thank for the three points in the dying seconds, as he deflected an effort from Karlsruhe's Michael Mutzel over the bar.

Karlsruhe stay bottom, while the win keeps Bayern second, but just one point behind Hertha who were brought crashing down to earth after hosts Stuttgart scored two goals in four minutes to continue their rise up the table to sixth. Brazilian striker Cacau scored just two minutes after the break to put the hosts ahead before a header from Germany Under-21 midfielder Sami Khedira to double the lead on 51 minutes.

Third-placed Wolfsburg are also just a point behind Hertha after they won 3-0 at Arminia Bielefeld. Brazil striker Grafite netted in the 58th minute to become the league's joint top-scorer with 18 goals in 16 games, level with Hoffenheim's injured striker Vedad Ibisevic. With fourth-placed Hamburg in action against Schalke on 22 March, Hoffenheim dropped further back in the title race as their 2-2 draw at Hannover left them five points off the leaders in fifth.

Bayer Leverkusen are seventh after their 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt. Although they hammered Stuttgart 4-0 the week before, Werder Bremen continue their erratic season as Borussia Dortmund captain Alexander Frei slotted home a 61st-minute penalty to take the three points as his side are ninth, with Bremen tenth in the table. Cologne remain in mid-table after their 2-0 win at second-from-bottom Energie Cottbus, while Borussia Moenchengladbach remain in the bottom three as they lost 1-0 on 20 March at home to fellow strugglers Bochum.

Klinsmann satisfied as Bayern close gap

Bayern Munich coach Jurgen Klinsmann was pleased the defending champions ground out a 1-0 win over Karlsruhe to narrow the gap on leaders Hertha Berlin to just a point. "The three points were what mattered," said Klinsmann, in spite of his side's average performance, as a single first-half strike from Argentina striker Jose Sosa gave Bayern the three points. With leaders Hertha Berlin losing 2-0 in Stuttgart, both Bayern and third-placed Wolfsburg are now only a point off the top, but Munich's performance at their Allianz Arena against rock-bottom Karlsruhe was far from impressive.

"We've won the way Hertha have won seven or eight times this season, which is OK from time to time," added Klinsmann. "Especially in the second half, it didn't go the way we wanted it to. We were too hurried, Karlsruhe fought back and made chances.

"We failed to wrap it up in the first half. Nevertheless, we're satisfied enough," he said. "It's good we're only a point behind Berlin. The players are allowed an occasional off day."

With Bayern facing Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals next month, captain Mark van Bommel was also demanding more from his side. "There's nothing much to say. We played badly, but won," said Bayern's Dutch captain, who signed a year's extension to his contract in midweek.

"It was OK to start with and we scored the goal. But otherwise, we're all aware it wasn't great," van Bommel said. "At this stage of the season, these are the games you have to win, and we've gone out and won. There are three points at stake, we've taken them, and that's all that matters."

League leaders Hertha Berlin let their four-point lead slip to just a single point as they were beaten 2-0 at Stuttgart. "It was a very good game," said Stuttgart coach Markus Babbel. "The team responded well to the 4-0 defeat by Werder Bremen the week before and rose to the challenge. They corrected a lot of mistakes and I am very happy."

With both Bayern and third-placed Wolfsburg hard on his side's heels, Hertha coach Lucien Favre was critical of his side's performance after losing captain Arne Friedrich with a first-half thigh injury.

"Stuttgart were clearly better," said the Swiss coach. "We saw two different teams, one played very well, the other one badly. If the team doesn't function properly, you will concede goals. We had a bad game and sometimes you have to accept that as a coach."

Schalke sack Rutten

German side Schalke 04 said that thay had parted company with their Dutch coach Fred Rutten. Mike Buskens, Youri Mulder and Oliver Reck, all members of the club's backroom staff, will take charge of training.

Earlier Thursday, the 46-year-old Rutten said he had expected to leave the struggling Bundesliga side at the end of the season.

Rutten had a contract with Schalke until 2010 having only taken over as trainer of the Royal Blues in July 2008, but the club are eighth in the table and have been blighted by erratic form this season.

Ancelotti: Milan need two signings

AC Milan only need two good close-season signings to be back at their best, coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Friday.

Ancelotti is under pressure with his side trailing Serie A leaders Inter Milan by 14 points in third place and effectively out of the title race. Last season Milan finished fifth and failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. They were favourites to win the UEFA Cup this year but lost in the round of 32 to Werder Bremen.

However, Ancelotti, whose contract runs until 2010, is confident it will not take much to turn things around. "With two well-chosen buys we'll be competitive again," he told the club website, "...a central defender and a striker because that department should be reinforced."

Next season Milan's back line will be without inspirational 40-year-old captain Paolo Maldini, who plans to retire in May. Ancelotti said there was no way he would leave Milan if they qualified for the Champions League group stage by coming third.

He also denied media reports he lunched with Florentino Perez recently to discuss taking over at Real Madrid next term if Perez is re-elected president of the Spanish champions. "There is no truth in it," he said, before quipping "and anyway the first course was cannelloni and no one wrote that".

Ancelotti, Serie A's longest serving coach having been appointed in 2001, led Milan to Champions League triumphs in 2003 and 2007 but has captured only one league title - in 2004.

Unhappy Allianz in Munich

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has slammed city rivals 1860 Munich for considering moving their home games away from the Allianz Arena.

The second division side this week set up a task force to examine the possibility of moving out of the 69,000-capacity arena and into a smaller home in the city.

However, Rummenigge claims that by doing so they would be breaching a contract with Bayern to act as tenants in the stadium until 2025.

By moving back to the Olympic Stadium, or even to the smaller Grunwalder Stadion in the city, Rummenigge believes they stand to gain very little and lose a lot.

"I have got to say, quite honestly and openly, that it is like in any rental agreement - if the tenant wants to move out of the flat, or in this case the stadium, then there are damages to pay," Rummenigge told the city's Tz newspaper.

"If 1860 Munich think they can simply move out without any consequences, then they are very naive."

Bayern have already bailed out their city rivals once by buying their joint share in the stadium venture last year.

As a result, the Lions have to pay rent to remain at the Arena and Rummenigge claims he will not be making any compromises.

"We have already accommodated them in a big way and our willingness to talk is exhausted," he added.

"We learned about all this from the newspaper, which is also typical 1860 style.

"We are used to it."

Unless 1860 can return to the top flight of German football in the near future, they are facing serious financial problems.

They were relegated to the second division in 2005 and have struggled to bounce back. They are currently 11 points adrift of the promotion berths with nine games of the season remaining.

Enke Out to Prove He's No 1

Robert Enke will start Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein in Leipzig determined to prove he deserves to be Germany's number one.

The Hannover stopper's bid to be Jens Lehmann's permanent successor has been hampered by a broken hand, which has allowed the likes of Bayer Leverkusen's Rene Adler and Tim Wiese from Werder Bremen to stake their claims.

Adler, though, is himself missing this weekend with an elbow injury, and 31-year-old Enke is determined to show he is the best option for coach Joachim Low.

"I know that there will be a rush for the number one spot," he said. "I accept the competition and hope that I can continue the way I was going before my injury."

And he joked: "I am definitely the right man because as I have read I am the only national goalkeeper who up till now has not conceded a goal against Liechtenstein."

Enke played in Germany's 6-0 victory in Vaduz in September, one of only four caps he has won.

Germany certainly have nothing like the experience among their goalkeepers that they had when Oliver Kahn and Lehmann were competing, and goalkeeping coach Andreas Kopke insists Enke cannot yet call himself first choice.

"We are still not set on a number one," he said. "We will not wait for the World Cup to make the decision, but we will also not put ourselves under pressure."

Kopke explained Enke's club form had earned him the start tomorrow, saying: "Despite the difficult situation at his club, he has always performed."

Germany go into the match four points clear at the top of Group Four, although second-placed Russia have a game in hand.

Tomorrow's opponents are bottom of the table and Mario Gomez hopes the game will give him the chance to bag his first international goal in a year.

Injury to Miroslav Klose means the Stuttgart striker will play from the start, probably alongside Lukas Podolski, as he looks to add to his six international goals.

He said: "I hope I can justify the faith of the coach and want to deliver a good performance. I always have my chances in the national team, but have unfortunately not scored the goals. But I have enough self-belief to know that I will score my goals if I am fit."

Defender Per Mertesacker should be fit to play, but striker Stefan Kiessling (knee) is a doubt and midfielder Piotr Trochowski (knee) is definitely out.

Adler will also miss the qualifier against Wales in Cardiff next week.

Liechtenstein have improved since their thrashing at home to Germany, drawing away to Azerbaijan and frustrating Wales for long periods before eventually losing 2-0.

They have still to score in goal in the group, and are hampered by injury and suspension this weekend, but defender Marco Ritzberger insists morale is high.

He told the Liechtensteiner Vaterland newspaper: "It has long been known that we have to battle with some suspended and injured players.

"In spite of this we want to do our best, especially as we have a large squad and chances for other players can present themselves."

Kahn: Schalke Came Too Eearly

Oliver Kahn has turned down the chance to become general manager at Schalke.

The former Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeper had been tipped to become the successor to Andreas Muller, who left the club earlier this month.

He had held talks with Schalke chairman Clemens Tonnies, but has now revealed it was not the right time to take up the position.

He told Kicker magazine: "I would have loved to have done it, but the offer came six months too early."

Tonnies added in Bild: "At this time it is not happening. But it is not a big issue, it doesn't cause us problems."

Former Germany coach Rudi Voller, currently director of sport at Bayer Leverkusen, has reportedly emerged as another possible candidate, although Leverkusen have denied this.

Schalke are not only looking for a new manager, but also a new coach following the sacking of Fred Rutten.

President Josef Schnusenberg said an interim coach was now likely to be installed for the remaining nine games of the season. The training staff of Mike Buskens, Youri Mulder and Oliver Reck are in temporary charge at the moment.

"We haven't made a definite decision about it yet," Schnusenberg told the club's official website, www.schalke04.de.

"An interim solution with a new coach for the remaining nine games is by all means a consideration.

"We now have the required time thanks to the international break. You need to give us that. But a possible interim coach will definitely work with Mike, Youri and Oliver."

Schnusenberg revealed the 2-1 home defeat by Hamburg last weekend had sealed Rutten's fate.

"The game against HSV was a critical match for us, but there should not have been a knee-jerk reaction." he said. "We wanted to take time over such an important question and that's what we did.

"You have to see that in this season we have largely missed all of our sporting goals. Then doubts of course arise as to whether a continued partnership makes sense and brings success. Fred Rutten lacked luck."

Dutchman Rutten has been linked with the PSV Eindhoven hotseat, but Schnusenberg insisted Schalke never received an approach from the Eredivisie outfit.

"No one contacted us," he said. "We were always honest and open with the coach and of course expect the same in return."

Wilson reflects on ‘brilliant’ Cyprus Rally

Briton Matthew Wilson secured fifth place on the Cyprus Rally, matching his best result of the 2008 season and rounding off the weekend with his first ever main stage victory.

The 22-year-old Stobart VK M-Sport team driver is enjoying his best start yet to a WRC season and following the seventh places he scored in Ireland and Norway, now lies sixth in the drivers’ championship - two points ahead of factory Ford driver Jari-Matti Latvala.

Wilson and his co-driver Scott Martin initially struggled on Friday, when the rally was based on the island’s asphalt roads, but upped their game on Saturday when the competition switched to gravel, moving up three places in three stages and into a close battle for fifth with Citroen Junior Team driver Sebastien Ogier.

Ogier snatched fifth place after an engine stall set Wilson back several seconds on the rally’s 40 kilometre penultimate stage, but Wilson took the fight to Ogier on the short final one, posting the joint fastest time (with Latvala) and taking fifth when the Frenchman crashed 200 metres from the end.

“It has been a brilliant weekend,” said Wilson. “I had a slow start on Friday but the next two days more than made up for it. We put ourselves under pressure stalling on the long stage on Sunday and losing ten seconds, but that meant we went into the last stage with the pressure back on Ogier. We were three seconds up with a few kilometres to go and I think the pressure got to him and he ended up sliding off just before the end. This signifies a big step forward for me; we pushed hard during the weekend but we were always well within our limits and that’s really encouraging.”

After crashing his Ford Focus on the road section before the first stage, Wilson’s team-mate Henning Solberg did all he could on Saturday and Sunday to salvage something positive from Cyprus. Top six finishes on all three of the final day’s stages meant he managed to grab a manufacturer’s point for finishing 18th.

“It was a very disappointing start to the rally but things obviously got better,” said the Norwegian. “It was difficult with all the mud on the stages and sometimes it was hard to keep the car on the road. The most important thing was to score points for the team and maintain my fourth place in the drivers’ standings.”

Team principal Malcolm Wilson said: “What a great drive from Matthew, he has shown true grit and put in a really determined performance. He has demonstrated maturity, especially when the fight was on with Ogier, and this is definitely a product of the long term plan we have. It goes to show that finishing rallies and gaining experience of the stages is really working for him. With Henning backing him up, it’s been another strong team performance for Stobart; the hard work by the mechanics in getting Henning’s car back in the rally has paid off.”

Marcus Gronholm makes WRC comeback

Double World Rally Champion Marcus Gronholm has decided to come out of retirement to contest April’s Rally Portugal in a Subaru Impreza WRC.

The Finn, 41, will drive a latest specification Impreza run by Prodrive, with backing from Rally Portugal and its sponsor Vodafone. He will be co-driven by his navigator since 1995, Timo Rautiainen.

The appearance - which for now is being billed as a one-off - will be Gronholm’s first entry in a WRC rally since his retirement after Wales Rally GB in 2007.

“I made the decision a few days ago,” Gronholm told wrc.com. “It’s okay to come back again. Everybody is looking at me, and maybe I’m stupid, but to have fun and drive again, why not?”

Gronholm, who has won 30 WRC rallies, has taken part in the last two editions of Rally Portugal, driving a Ford Focus WRC on both occasions: in 2007 as a Ford factory team driver - when he finished fourth - and in 2008 driving the event safety car.

The Finn is quite clear about his expectations: “I will not start aiming for the win, as I want to compare my speed with the regular WRC boys over the first few stages. The important thing is to feel confidence and pleasure, coming back to an event that I enjoy very much and know the stages quite well.”

Gronholm wanted to spend more time in the car before making any results predictions. “We have to test the car first, we have to do changes, and find the right feeling and then I can say more,” he said. “I drove the car a little bit last weekend in Norway and we have another test planned in March, but for the moment I don’t really know where we are. But I hope we can do some little bit good times - that’s the aim.”

Prodrive director Richard Taylor revealed that discussion with Gronholm had been going on for many months. “It’s no secret that we were talking with Marcus at the end of last year,” said Taylor. “He had some interest in coming back so we kept the discussions going and we’ve reached an agreement to go to Portugal. It’s a one-off at this time but we’ll see if he likes it.”

Gronholm’s car will be an evolution of the 2008 model used by Petter Solberg and Chris Atkinson on Wales Rally GB and will be fitted with Ohlins dampers. “We have to allow for the fact that we’re not able to homologate the 2009 car fully, but we’ll put together the best spec of car that we possibly can,” added Taylor.

Gronholm’s Impreza breaks cover

Prodrive has unveiled the Subaru Impreza WRC2008 Marcus Gronholm will drive on the Rally of Portugal

The two-time World Rally Champion will have three days to familiarise himself with the new car before starting his first World Rally Championship event in nearly 16 months. Gronholm drove a Subaru test car in Wales last week and will carry out a further two day pre-event test in Spain this week.

Gronholm’s Impreza is fundamentally the same as the ones used by Petter Solberg and Chris Atkinson at the Subaru World Rally Team last season.

“We have only been able to make minor changes to the car because of homologation restrictions, with the most significant difference being the Ohlins dampers,” said Prodrive technical director, David Lapworth.

“In a perfect world, Marcus would have had far more time behind the wheel, however, with his years of experience, I am absolutely confident he will very quickly find a rhythm in the Impreza,” he added.

Gronholm’s participation in the Rally of Portugal has been made possible by the support of the Portuguese Tourist Board. The car has been entered under the Prodrive team name and will be run from the same service area as the Prodrive-supported Adapta World Rally Team.

Suzuki and Rizla continue MotoGP partnership

Suzuki Motor Corporation and Imperial Tobacco Group are pleased to announce that they have agreed terms for Rizla - the world's leading rolling papers - to continue to be the title sponsor of the Japanese company's MotoGP team for 2009.

Rizla has been the title sponsor of the Suzuki Grand Prix motorcycle race team for the past three seasons and a further one-year extension will see Suzuki MotoGP stars Loris Capirossi and Chris Vermeulen racing the distinctive 'Rizla blue' Suzuki GSV-Rs during this season's championship.

This is further positive news for Suzuki, following on from two successful tests in 2009 at Sepang in Malaysia and recently at Losail in Qatar. Capirossi and Vermeulen both had equally impressive tests as they were consistently inside the top six at both venues and showed big improvements at the two circuits compared to last year's performances. Both riders benefited from many new developments to this year's Suzuki GSV-R, including changes to aerodynamics, chassis, engine and suspension.

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP will next be in track action at Jerez in Spain at the end of March for the Official MotoGP test, which also includes a televised session. The first race of the year will be a night event, when Rizla Suzuki MotoGP return to Losail on Sunday 12th April.

Paul Denning - Team Manager:
"This is very positive news for Suzuki to continue our partnership with Rizla in today's current difficult climate. We have enjoyed a very close relationship, both on and off the track, with Rizla during the past three years and have certainly considered all the representatives of Rizla as part of the team.

"Our on track performance during the first two tests has also been very encouraging and shows how much hard work the factory has put in during the off season. The GSV-R has certainly come a long way since last year and we know there is still more to come - Chris and Loris were both very impressed with the new bike, but we know there is still a lot of work to do. The Suzuki team will continue to work hard to keep improving, and we are very positive about our prospects for 2009 in partnership with Rizla."

Graham Blashill - Imperial Tobacco Group Sales & Marketing Director:
"In difficult economic times, it is even more important to continue to support major brands and excellence in sport. Rizla and Suzuki are global brands committed to providing top quality and innovative products, and we are pleased to be continuing our partnership."

Rizla Suzuki ready for final MotoGP test

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP is on its way to Jerez in Spain for the final test in preparation for the 2009 MotoGP season.

Following two successful tests at Sepang in Malaysia and Losail in Qatar, Chris Vermeulen and Loris Capirossi will be planning to continue with the encouraging start to the year that has seen both riders near the top of the timesheets at both tests.

The Official MotoGP Test at Jerez will also see the launch of the Suzuki GSV-R in its new 2009 livery, following the announcement that Rizla will remain as title sponsor for this year.

The 4,423m long Jerez circuit is a regular test-track for MotoGP, and the southern Spanish venue will stage the first piece of competitive action of 2009 when the riders take to the track for a timed 45-minute session on the Sunday afternoon. The fastest rider in this allotted time will drive away with a brand-new car.

Rizla Suzuki will complete its pre-season preparations at Jerez on March 28/29 before heading back to Qatar for the first race of the season. Vermeulen and Capirossi will begin their assaults on the championship with the series' one-and-only night race on Sunday April 12th.

Chris Vermeulen:
"The Jerez test can't come soon enough for me. After the first two tests, where we have made some good advances, it will be interesting to see what improvements the factory has made after all the data we supplied from Sepang and Qatar - I am sure the technicians are doing all they can to find what we are looking for. The Jerez test will be interesting, as it will be the first time we've had a timed session - similar to a new qualifying session - with the single rule tyres. This will give us a good chance to gauge what we could possibly expect from qualifying in the coming season. This is our last test before the season starts so it will be very important for the whole team to get in as much work as possible and end the break from racing on a high!"

Loris Capirossi:
"We have had a good start to the year, but we must continue to improve. I am very fit at the moment and have been training everyday to get ready for the new season. I believe that Suzuki will give us a bike that we can win on and I can't wait to see the latest version that we get at Jerez. I am really looking forward to the new season and I feel as prepared and fresh as I ever have done, so I just can't wait to get racing!"

Madrid hosts the presentation of the Repsol Honda Team

The Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid was converted into an authentic spectacle of light and music so that Repsol Honda Team`s latest addition, Andrea Dovizioso, could be presented to Spanish fans. Dani Pedrosa, still recovering from the injuries he picked up in the latest practice sessions in Qatar, did not want to miss out on the presentation either, and even though he was not able to be there in person he was there as a virtual guest via satellite. This allowed him to greet all the fans in the stadium from Barcelona and even to respond to the questions made by some Repsol workers.

At the end of the presentation Dovizioso unveiled the Repsol Honda RC212V 2009, A bike that he will ride and battle to be up with best on in this season`s World MotoGP Championship, and which thanks to the latest regulations, promises to be very competitive. With the 2009 season about to start and with all eyes on the first race on 12th April, at night in Qatar, the final round of the World Indoor Trial Championship became a party for all the fans in the stadium.

The recently crowned three times World Indoor Trial Champion, Toni Bou, made a spectacular entrance into the hall alongside Andrea Dovizioso. The two jumped onto the stage riding trial bikes, a fantastic sight that was a great warm-up for the official presentation of the riders that will defend the Repsol colours in the 2009 World MotoGP Championship. Music from Melocos and a spectacular light show were the atmospheric setting that gave a chance to all the fans packed into the Palacio de Deportes to get to know the new member of the Repsol Honda Team, and his brand new official RC212V.

The party carried on with the final round of the World Indoor Trial Championship, something that gave Bou a chance to offer his fifth world title to the public – this is his third indoor title – after he wrapped the championship by winning the penultimate round in Italy. The next time the Repsol Honda Team is together will be at the Official MotoGP Test that will take place in Jerez in two weeks, but only Andrea Dovizioso will be there. For Dani Pedrosa things are different, his objective is to be fit enough for the first race of the year: on 12th April at the Circuit of Losail, Qatar.

Dani Pedrosa
“I feel fine – that is making progress at a normal pace – and taking things with a lot of patience, because I still have two weeks left before I can begin to bend my knee. That is why I have not been able to be with the fans that have gone to see the presentation in Madrid, I have to let my body recover, which after all is what you have to bear in mind in a case like this. But being able to greet the fans that have gone to the presentation thanks to the video-conference from Barcelona, I am glad that I was able to be present, even though it was through a monitor. I would like to be fit enough to do more practice, but I will have to find another way to prepare. The objective is stil the same, try to be fit for the first race in Qatar in a month`s time.”

Andrea Dovizioso
“Becoming an official rider in the Repsol Honda Team is a dream come true for me. It is a great experience and an incredible challenge, something I have already had a chance to see in the pre-season practice sessions. Being in the official team means that you carry more responsibility, I now have to help develop the motorbike, and that in the world of MotoGP is quite complex. All I did before was to ride and go as fast as possible, refining the setup, but now I also have to think about how the bike behaves so that its overall performance can be improved. The bike is going quite a bit better as we have more power coming from the engine, and a new chassis has really helped us with the sensations that the front end transmits to us, it now leans over better. I am very pleased to be in Madrid for the presentation of the Repsol team, and from now on I will do all I can in the fight for the world title.”

The Hungarian GP falls from the calendar

The World MotoGP Championship was going to inaugurate a new circuit later on this year: the Balatonring, and to be exact on 20th September 2009. However, the Hungarian GP has been suspended after work at the circuit fell a long way behind schedule. The organisers of the World MotoGP Championship have taken this decision after a request was made by the company promoting the GP to suspend it.

Balatonring Zrt., the organisers of this year`s race in Hungary, has explained that the bad weather experienced in the zone as well as the worldwide recession have made it very difficult to make progress with the building work. This setback does not however put the relationship between the two parties in peril as they are going ahead with the project to organise a World MotoGP Championship race in Hungary.

The building work will carry on but the next date in its calendar is the inauguration of the circuit with a MotoGP race in 2010. The agreement between Balatonring and Dorna Sports (the company that organises the World Championship) has a duration of five years.

The suspension of the race in Hungary and its removal from this year`s calendar will not alter any of the other race dates. The FIA has also decided not to replace it with another GP race and so this year`s definitive calendar contains a total of 17 races.

Things get complicated for Gibernau in latest MotoGP test

Working on the sophisticated electronic package used by the Ducati Desmosedici GP9 Sat machine, Sete Gibernau’s three days of testing in Sepang last week left the Spaniard and his team with more questions than answers. The former MotoGP World Championship runner-up was characteristically honest about the situation upon the conclusion of the test, using any setbacks as motivation for the coming months of preseason.

”I don’t think today was the best day for us. Even though we have done quite a lot of work on the electronics we haven’t been able to get too many answers, because we had a few problems in the afternoon that prevented us from completing as many laps as we would have liked,” revealed Gibernau after recording a quickest time of 2’02.727 on Saturday.

“In general it has been a positive three days, but things went from better to worse. We did a great job on the first day but the job seemed to get more and more complicated. It is all part of the process for a new team but the potential is there and what we need to do now is keep working hard; there is a long way to go -especially for me.

Gibernau returns to the MotoGP World Championship in 2009 after two seasons in temporary retirement.

Gibernau returning to action after Qatar absence

Veteran rider Sete Gibernau will resume his preseason preparations in Jerez this weekend having missed the night test in Qatar earlier this month due to a shoulder injury.

When Sete Gibernau suffered a small setback to his recovery from a winter shoulder operation during a training session in February it significantly affected his 2009 MotoGP comeback programme, as he aggravated an old shoulder ligament problem and missed the Official MotoGP Night Test in Qatar.

Having never ridden under the floodlights at the Losail International Circuit that was a missed opportunity to prepare for the 2009 season opener on 12th April at the Arabian desert track, but Gibernau will be raring to go at this weekend’s Official MotoGP test in Jerez, with the Grupo Francisco Hernando Ducati satellite team.

motogp.com spoke to the experienced Spanish star before he left his native Barcelona for this weekend’s workout in southern Spain and he explained that he had recently paid a visit to Ducati’s headquarters in Italy, where the factory updated him on how the Desmosedici GP9 had developed in recent months. Gibernau, in return, told Ducati management how his shoulder was recovering and what could be expected of him in Jerez due to his current physical limitations.

“I left Italy feeling happy and relaxed, with my mind at ease having agreed with everyone that we will just have to see how things go in Jerez according to how much my shoulder can take,” Gibernau said. “The aim is just to get back in contact with the bike and ride, as we don’t think I can do too many laps in Jerez.”

The 36 year-old continued, “The whole shoulder was affected but it has healed quite well. I am not at 100% yet but I’m getting better. Having had to rest completely means the muscle around the area has weakened so we can’t go to Jerez and force things too much. I’ll do some laps on the first day and see if I can do a bit more on the second day, but the main thing is to make sure I don’t make anything worse before Qatar.”

The former World Championship runner-up admitted that the left shoulder injury has affected his plans for his Grand Prix return, stating, “Obviously this has set me back quite a bit. In the first couple of races the objectives will be fairly different to what they would have been, but it is important for us to take a step forward in Jerez and the same in Qatar at round one. I’ll have to train as much as I can and if I can’t finish the first race I’ll have to adapt.”

“Clearly, the priority has to be gradually rehabilitating the shoulder and getting it back to full strength as soon as possible, but before getting back to a good level we just need to make sure it doesn’t get worse,” Gibernau added.

Although his early season expectations have been lessened, Gibernau nonetheless remains positive about the project he is undertaking with Pablo and Gelete Nieto.

The ex-Ducati factory rider noted, “The fact that a new team, which has been created from nothing and which I am part of, is going to the Official Test at Jerez and will be at the first race of the year is something very special. We wanted to achieve this and we are getting there. It is not easy to create a MotoGP team from scratch and that is what we are in the process of doing. Just competing in that first race at Qatar will mean we have taken a highly successful first step. It has been a big job for everyone and Pablo and Gelete have been working extremely hard.”

Yamano explains decision to draft in Akiyoshi for test

Repsol Honda Team Manager Kazuhiko Yamano has explained the thingking behind putting Kosuke Akiyoshi on the factory RC212V at this weekend's Official MotoGP Test.

With the injured Dani Pedrosa out of action for the time being Andrea Dovizioso and the Repsol Honda team need all the help they can get as they make their final preparations for the 2009 season.

Heading to the Official MotoGP Test this weekend the team have therefore drafted in former Suzuki test rider Kosuke Akiyoshi to assist new boy Dovizioso with his work schedule.

Team boss Kazuhiko Yamano explained, “This is an important test and we’re looking to use these two days to maximum effect as we approach the start of the season. The team gathered a lot of useful data at the previous tests in Sepang and Qatar and it’s our intention to make significant progress in this final preseason test.”

Yamano continued, “Dani won’t be riding because it’s important he recovers fully after his operation, and so Kosuke Akiyoshi will ride Dani’s machine. Although in a perfect world Dani would be testing here, we’re confident that Kosuke can ably assist Andrea with our development programme for the RC212V.”

The team have revealed that Akiyoshi will ride Pedrosa’s machine (displaying the race number 64) and will continue building on the technical data gathered at the previous preseason outings. The Japanese test rider will take part in the free practice sessions on Saturday and Sunday, but not in Sunday’s MotoGP BMW M Award (Official Practice) showdown session.

Pedrosa, meanwhile, is reportedly recovering well after an operation on 4th March which involved the insertion of a titanium screw into his left wrist and a skin graft on his left knee - following a test crash in Qatar.

The 24-year-old Spaniard was seen by a doctor last week who confirmed that his recovery is going according to plan. The stitches were removed from his left wrist and he was able to begin moving the joint. Next week Pedrosa will also start to move his knee with a view to starting rehab and getting fit enough for the season opening Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar on 12th April.

WSBK : Disappointing races for Ten Kate Honda

The second round of the SBK world championship at Losail in Qatar was a disappointing one for the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team, whose results failed to live up to expectations.

Not one of the three riders managed to step onto the podium and this was telling evidence of the current form of the Dutch team.

The best results came from Ryuichi Kiyonari, with an eighth and a fourth place. In particular in race 2, after changing his rear tyre from the first race, the Japanese rider had a good run to fourth, just a fraction away from the podium. Carlos Checa had a good race 1, the Spaniard finishing in fifth, but after the break problems with chatter did not allow him to move up any higher than 13th. As for Jonathan Rea, a 12th and an eighth place were all that he could manage after two difficult races.

Ryuichi Kiyonari: "In race one I had a very bad start and had to push hard at the beginning. After that it was difficult to keep the lap times. We changed the tyre for race two and things felt much better, but, again, I had to push very hard and was maybe a bit too aggressive with the throttle at the beginning, trying to catch the leading group. When I reached Biaggi, I didn't have enough left to get past him. I hoped he might make a mistake to let me on to the podium, which would have been the best reward for my team who have worked so hard. But it didn't happen, so I had to accept fourth place".

Carlos Checa: "I had quite bad chatter again in race one. We thought we had eliminated this problem after Phillip Island, but it was back and gave me quite bad arm pump. Unfortunately, it was even worse in race two and I also had a bad start which meant I had to try to pass many other riders. With the problems we had, I didn't really have the confidence to push as hard as I wanted. We'll work on everything before we get to Valencia and hope for better things there".

Jonathan Rea: "Today has been one of mixed emotions - in fact, it's been quite a weird weekend. We were right up there on Friday and Saturday morning, but went the wrong way and Superpole was not good. So, we went back to Friday's settings for the races today and I got a pretty good start in the first one, but got bad arm pump. The guys in the Clinica Mobile sorted it out for race two and everything felt much better; but from 17th on the grid, I couldn't quite catch the leading group so I had quite a lonely race. I had one or two moments with the front, but I'm happy with the way I rode and I'm looking forward to Valencia now."
