U.S. Open 2009: A Stage for the Next Generation of Stars

Oudin, Cilic, Isner, Wozniaki, Wickmayer, Bondarenko, Del Potro, even Soderling.
What do all these players have in common? They went deep and/or made big upsets at the Open. What else? Well, they are young, and represent a new(er) generation of tennis players ready to make their mark.

It's been an exciting U.S. Open tournament this year. We've seen Melanie Oudin play Cinderella and captivate an entire nation with her gutsy tennis. We were in awe watching Isner dismantle Roddick with bombs-away serve, and fire-in-the-belly attitude. Cilic stunned us all by thoroughly throttling a bewildered Andy Murray and now letting the world see what so many have been talking about for some time. We've seen Wozniaki and Del Potro, already hyped up players quietly, and methodically advance through the draw, beating all challengers with quality ball, and often, at slam winning levels.

Soderling may get slain horribly again tonight by Federer, but what a year the young Swede has had so far. If Federer didn't exist, could he have won the French? Could he have advanced tonight? I'm totally writing him off here, but I shouldn't be. Soderling is built to surprise. His game is built for hot play with a chip on his shoulder. I think it's more the perspective Robin needs to bring onto the court, than a new game against Federer. He needs to hate Roger, and build the war in his head from the ground up to win.

When all is said and done at the Open this year, these young stars won't be (done). Unless Serena and Roger continue to keep their strangle-hold on slam tennis, one or more of these mentioned players will be taking slams in 2010. You can bet on it.

The future of tennis is looking good.
