Zambrotta: 'AC Milan must have faith'

Gianluca Zambrotta and Marco Storari admit the derby did not go as planned, but believe Milan can recover from this humiliation.

“I honestly expected a different derby debut,” moaned the goalkeeper after the 4-0 thrashing by Inter.

“We had prepared so well for this game and I think we lost it all in the 10 minutes between [Gennaro] Gattuso’s injury and the red card.

“We wanted to win, but unfortunately we weren’t attentive enough on the first goal and teams like that punish you at the first chance they get.

“At least this will serve as a lesson for the future and I am convinced we will get back on our feet. The Coach already spoke to us and we all agree to put it behind us, as we have two weeks to prepare for our next challenges.”

Zambrotta was also confident that the 4-0 demolition job would not wreck Milan’s Scudetto ambitions just two rounds into the season.

“Before the opening goal we had played very well, not allowed Inter any chances and controlled the tempo,” noted the veteran.

“Unfortunately after that and with the penalty and red card, everything changed. We must nonetheless have faith, because we are just at the start of the season and we have the quality to do well.

“Compared to last term we have more players who can hold the ball. We proved that against Siena and also with Inter up until the deadlock was broken.”
